Gives good examples of real world applications

I have been using this book to teach an introductory university-level mechanical engineering class that emphasizes computer programming. This book adequately covers all important topics in Fortran and contains many real-world engineering applications (such as solving for roots).

The examples are well commented, which is great for students who are beginning to learn how to program.

I feel that this book is designed for someone who has very little experience in computer programming and I would not recommend this book to someone who is already well-versed in other computer languages. A much smaller book, such as "Schaum's Outline of Programming With Fortran 77 (Schaum's Outlines)," would be better for advanced programmers who want to learn Fortran.

Unacceptable printing.

I am returning this item because the printing is unacceptably poor. The book is softbound and yet the pages appear to be photocopies, and not good ones. The syntax definitions (the most important part, for me), are in gray-on-gray box text that, in this printing, is almost unreadable.

Best money spent for multiplication review bc it lets you use over and over which is exactly what kids need for learning multiplication (constant repetitious review). Have been using it for over a year now and works great. Also have the old alphabet set and used that for both my two older kids over a span of 3 years and are still in good enough shape that my third will also use it covering not s total of 8 years of use!!

Like children with other learning differences, gifted children often need specialized curriculum and support in order to achieve academic and social success throughout their school experiences. Gifted children have exceptional abilities in one or more learning domains (e.g., mathematics, music, athletics). Without coaching or special support these children may become bored or frustrated with school. They may develop poor work and study habits. Gifted students may feel out of place with same-age peers, seeking friendships with older children who share their interests. Early enrichment and intervention is important in order to set learning patterns for any child with special abilities or needs. Early identification can make a significant difference to a child who is a gifted learner.

The Gifted and Talented Series by Gifted Games (Gateway Gifted Resources) helps prepare young children for Gifted and Talented testing (NNAT2, OLSAT, and COGAT). These fun workbooks are developmentally appropriate for young children and offer practice opportunities for testing in reasoning, problem solving, and cognitive tasks. To keep children motivated and make learning fun, the test prep books use a detective theme “Gifted Detective Agency” as an incentive to finish the workbooks.

Each workbook targets one or more TAG tests. The workbooks have 5 parts, each designed to prepare a young child for gifted and talented tests.
(1) The introduction provides an overview of TAG tests covered in the workbook. Information is provided about the workbook, test taking tips, and information on the “Gifted Detective agency.”
(2) The workbook Section consists of skill building activities and exercises similar to ones in the tests.
(3) Practice Question Set introduces children to test taking in a relaxed manner. Parents can provided guidance and identify child strengths.
(4) Directions and Answer Key section provides answers for the practice questions and the tests.
(5) Afterward Information about additional books and a “Gifted Detective Agency” certificate.

Review of OLSAT Gifted and Talented Series Workbook:
Prepares your child for taking the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test- Level A. The OLSAT measures a child’s abilities on several cognitive and verbal tasks. The workbook is a fun and valuable resource to prepare children for the OLSAT. The workbook questions are designed (patterns, figures, shapes, and colors) to simulate the test taking experience. On a very fundamental level familiarizing your child with test taking, test format, and the questions will aid in the test taking experience and facilitate their comfort by mastery of “test taking skills” so that your child can demonstrate their abilities and knowledge.

The Gifted and Talented Workbook is a wonderful resource for parents and children. In addition to the academic value there is also the benefit of working together with your child so you can understand their learning style, interests, and abilities. Most importantly completing the workbook with your child is just plain fun! As an early childhood educator and researcher I highly recommend the OLSAT Gifted and Talented Workbook (and the whole series!)

This is a fantastic book for preparing kids to take G&T exams and the OLSAT. I also bought the NNAT book by the same publisher. The design is really appealing to young kids and keeps them engaged. Highly recommend.

Terrific OLSAT Level A Prep Workbook

This workbook includes 200 practice questions for the OLSAT Level A test, which is a test to help determine whether your child is a candidate for a gifted level curriculum. This workbook is geared for children in preschool and kindergarten. Parents are to work with their children to ensure they understand how to listen, follow directions and focus on the task at hand.

The OLSAT Level A test is a one hour test and has 40 questions for pre-K and 60 questions for the kindergarten level. The actual test is in black and white. This workbook has some color to engage kids but also gives them practice in black and white questions.

The OLSAT tests both verbal and nonverbal abilities. Children are expected to master quite a few skills including following directions, classifying objects, seeing analogies and patterns, reasoning, understanding spatial concepts, as well as understanding the meaning of words.

To add to the incentive to complete the workbook, children who finish the workbook will become members of the Gifted Detective Agency and will be awarded a personal certificate.

Answer keys and directions are in the back of the book.

Ella Fitzgerald, who died in 1996, came from a poverty-stricken background. She was abandoned by her father, possibly abused by her stepfather and lived on the streets as a teenager. As a club singer she had to contend with racism, sexism and advances from predatory men. But in the 1950s, just when Billie Holiday, from a similar background, was falling toward drug addiction and a sordid death, Fitzgerald escaped the seeming inevitability of that fate. Her songbook albums relaunched her career in a new direction, and she became a beloved figure in American jazz, known for her musical precision and luminous clarity. This biography offers an assessment of the emotional strength apparent in both her life and music.

For his exhaustive biography, Nicholson ( Jazz: The Modern Resurgence ) draws on written accounts of the legendary singer and on interviews with her childhood friends and musicians who have worked with her; he was unable to arrange to talk with Fitzgerald herself. The result is a thorough, dispassionate account of a career that began in 1935 when, at age 17, the singer first appeared in New York City's Apollo Theater and the Harlem Opera House. Nicholson shows how Fitzgerald was advanced by Milt Gabler at Decca and by promoter Norman Granz; he follows the grueling schedule to which she subjected herself and provides lucid analyses of her style and place in the history of jazz and 20th-century popular music. Although there are accounts here of her continuously unhappy love life, Fitzgerald's personality remains obscure, possibly a reflection of a performer to whom nothing other than singing seems to really matter. Ella Fitzgerald's hit song "A-Tisket, A-Tasket" grabbed national attention in 1938, and over the next three decades she won much popular and critical acclaim. Born in poverty, she rose to perform at Carnegie Hall, becoming wealthy and well liked. Nicholson discusses Fitzgerald's musical influences, places her in the context of swing and bebop, and discusses her career highlights, including the Songbook albums. But he also bemoans the many silly songs she recorded to achieve wide sales and discusses her lack of depth compared with Billie Holiday. A 61-page discography by jazz historian Phil Schaap is said to include previously unknown recordings. Although this biography joins at least four others (some in German), it seems well researched and is recommended for general collections.

Ella the Greatest

A wonderful story of the greatest, sweetest, most modest, uncomplicated female singer ever. Respected and admired by her musicians and most especially by Frank Sinatra, a legend who adored her.

Enjoyable, enlightening, thoroughly researched.

I'd have given this book 4 1/2 stars given the option. The only reason I didn't give it 5 is that it gets somewhat dry towards the end, but I blame my attention span for some of that. It's full of fascinating stories, tidbits and opinions from musicians, producers, friends and agents who worked with Ella. You'll come away from the book with a new understanding of Ella the person and Ella the musician. You'll learn much about the times and the musicians who created the story of popular music and jazz in America. You'll also have a fascinating guide to her recorded music, the whys and the hows of it, the circumstances that made it wonderful or less than great. I recommend this book!

Every step in recording studio and no other informations

I read this book in for the first time in 1996. and now, second time around, still have the same feeling - Stuart Nicholson had obviously find easier to trace every step Ella Fitzgerald ever made in recording studio,than what she thought,felt and reasons behind her behaviour."A model in research and musical insight?" There is a year-by-year recording dates discography but not one single interview or even quotte!!Yes,Ella was a wonderful,gifted singer,but what eventually came out of this book (between the lines,if you bother to read) is that she was easily and ruthlessly pushed around by Norman Granz (manager) and made him a millionaire,toured 365 days in the year so Granz could collect Picasso paintings & move to Switzerland and that same Granz didnt have understanding for her,making a scene when she couldnt perform as her sister had just died (Duke Ellington stepped to protect her and got a slap on HIS nose instead).If Stuart Nicholson didnt have acces to do interview with Fitzgerald herself or at least some of her close friends,I wonder why did he bother to writte a book at all (just to dig some dirt & discover that she was - maybe?- a victim a child abuse,something that she kept behind her and didnt want to discuss,which we should understand and respect).No matter how appealing singer Ella was,I find repulsive idea of this big woman being lead around by her manager as beast of burden.And they said Billie Holiday was a tragic figure - hey, Billie at least had a good time! At the end of 245 pages,I find this book simply overrated - you can easily find Fitzgerald's discography in every jazz dictionary and perhaps as a subject of his book Nicholson should have consider Norman Granz instead.
