A great resource for Brits. A good resource for Yanks.

If you want to start up a greeting card business in Great Britain, this book is worth 5 stars. For Americans, the general information in this book is still useful, but when the author gets specific about items such as tax codes, types of businesses, or even standard envelope sizes, then we Yankees need to refer to other resources (if such resources exist--I haven't found yet found a book on starting and running a greeting card business in the USA. The closest I've come is The Handmade Marketplace: How to Sell Your Crafts Locally, Globally, and On-Line by Kari Chapin.)

"Start and Run a Greeting Cards Business" assumes that you are already designing and making your own greeting cards, and want to start selling them. It has lots of practical advice on starting up a small retail business. I learned from reading this book that I am probably more inclined to sell my card designs to manufacturers, rather than try to run my own business. According to the author, "freelancers design about a third of the cards produced by the large manufacturers."

Unfortunately for me, the lists of places where artists can sell their greeting card designs, as provided by this book, are all in the UK.

If you want to involve yourself in all phases of the greeting card business from design through production and marketing, the author walks you through the whole process. There is a chapter on printed cards that takes the beginner through the process of choosing a printer, selecting the 'board' (type of card), the finishes, and more general business information on how to place orders.

In each chapter the author highlights her key concepts and top tips. For example, in the chapter on printed cards, her top tip is: "when you find a good printer work with them and treat them well. They can make the difference between success and failure for your business."

Several chapters in this book deal with the different markets where greeting cards are sold, i.e. retail stores, craft fairs, parties, and the internet. Suggestions on how to package and display your product are abundant, although the author is not optimistic about internet sales. Her top tip in the chapter on "Alternative Ways of Selling" reads: "although Ebay is not a great way to sell cards it is very useful for sourcing suppliers."

If I do decide to branch out from my single spinneret of greeting cards in our local library, this is the book I'll turn to for developing my market. I wish the author would compile a new edition specifically for us Yankees!

This first novel may hold some appeal for bookworms, but a multitude of subplots proves distracting and weakens the tension. There are two basic story lines. The first revolves around a newborn worm named Fip, whose appetite runs to words rather than dirt. The second centers on sixth-grader Lerner Chase, recentlyAand unhappilyAtransplanted from Wisconsin to Washington, D.C. Lerner discovers Fip and realizes that every time he eats a word, the object it signifies disappears forever. The results of Fip's consumption can be pleasant (Fip eats a vending machine number and unleashes free chocolate bars) or dire (Fip eats the name of a newly charted star, sending its discoverer into a crisis). These developments occasion secondary story lines (e.g., about a sinister tycoon who employs thumb tacks and child labor to train the vicious dogs he sells as "Attackaterriers"). Amato plausibly sketches Lerner's evolving sense of responsibility about Fip's powers, including her panic when he almost eats the word "oxygen" and the name of her teacher Mr. Droan (but ends up devouring the words "Markus Droan's suit" instead.) The classroom dynamics between the ruling elite, Most Powerful Ones on Earth (MPOOEs), and the outcasts, Sorry Losers Under Ground (SLUGs), are believable enough, but with the exception of Lerner, most characters emerge as caricatures or types. Grade 4-6-The book opens with the turn of a page on the Bookworm's Desk Calendar, heralding the birth of a seemingly ordinary worm. But this is no common creature, for readers soon learn that he has a voracious appetite for the written word. It is sixth-grade Lerner Chanse who discovers that when Fip eats a word, that object disappears-forever. Lerner is having a hard time finding her place in her new school. She doesn't want any part of the MPOOE club (Most Powerful Ones on Earth), nor does she want to belong to the only other group-the SLUGS (Sorry Losers Under Ground). In a series of clever, if far-fetched events, she daringly uses Fip's power to turn the tide on the MPOOEs. Tongue-in-cheek wordplay in the quote on the desk calendar that opens each chapter prepares readers for the outlandish series of happenings to come.

For instance, when he eats the words "vending machine," the machine disappears, leaving a pile of candy on the floor. This becomes a moral dilemma for Lerner, as the power to have things disappear can have weighty consequences. If the pace is choppy and the weaving of several side plots (including one involving child labor) becomes confusing, the basic idea is creative, and Amato delivers some intriguing moments. REVWR

An Unusual Friendship

The book, "The Word Eater", is a book about a friendship between a magical worm, Fip, who eats words, and a girl named Lerner Chase, who is new at Cleveland Park Middle School. Being new at school, Lerner tried hard to fit in, but the school was ruled by mean bullies club called MPOOE, Most Powerful Ones On Earth. The bullies in the club called everybody else outside the club SLUG, Sorry Loser Under Ground.

At first, Learner tried to belong to MPOOE, having been tempted to do bad things that the bullies called "dare". Soon enough Learner got fed up with MPOOE's ridiculous and mean behavior and stood up for herself. After that, MPOOE labeled her as SLUG and made her school life miserable.

In the middle of her misery Lerner found Fip in school's Science lab and slowly discovered his magical power. Any words that Fip ate disappeared forever. Lerner tried many experiments with different words resulting a star to disappear, freeing children from child labor slavery, and many small and big accidents at school. But at the end, both Fip and Lerner realized that having a magical power is a very big responsibility and decided to get rid of Fip's power by eating the word, "Fip's Magic".

My favorite part of the book was when Fip ate the word MPOOE club and made the bullies club disappear forever. There are meanies in most school and I think many other kids would enjoy this book.

The older kids, both boys and girls, from 11-16 would like the book because of the justice served to the mean bullies club. I also think that little younger readers around age 8-10 would enjoy it too mainly because of the magical part of the story. I am 7 and, honestly, the book was little bit boring and hard at the beginning because the story was quite jumpy to introduce 7 different characters. I had to pause a lot and had to flip back to the earlier chapters. As the book developed into the middle and I was gotten used to the characters and I finished the later half of the book in one day. Considering that, I would say ages 10-14 will be closer audience group, both boys and girls.

I liked this book because it gave you something to think about. You really had to think about what Learner was doing when she let Fip eat all those words. If you can make sense of when the author jumps from different characters and places this is a good book for you. The names were very interesting it seemed that all the names represented the personalities of everyone. Like Mr. Droan and Learner Chanse. Learner had a chanse to learn a lot of things. Mr. Droan was very boring. This book had a lot of interesting details with humor on every page. MPOOEs and SLUGs were very descriptive just from their names. SLUGs are the Sorry Losers Under Ground and the MPOOEs Most Powerful Ones On Earth. At the school the only person who seemed to care about the kids was the librarian Ms. Popskavitch who alled everyone cookie.

I really liked the book because it was entertaining, and it was fun to think about being or having a worm like Fip. The names of the characters were weird. The librarian was really funny. She called everyone cookie. I liked the ending where they had the cartoon-like pictures. I thought the MPOOE club was stupid. It was a little over reacting because they thought they were the Most Powerful Ones On Earth. The name SLUGs was a mean name to make. Sorry Losers Under Ground is just plain mean. When i started to read the beggining of the book it felt a little boring, but once I got closer to the middle of the book, I think it got better. I think it was a really good book.

So she was naturally frightened when she began receiving strange phone calls. Little did she suspect who it was. Little did she realize that she was about to be dragged into a living nightmare, the likes of which could not have entered her wildest dreams !
My take: Okay, Miss Lamb really tried something different with this book. The hero and the heroine were lovers in a past life. The hero has clear recollections of their former lives since childhood. The heroine, Annie, does not. Her memories of their past life together is jogged only after meeting the hero. Annie is resistant to the hero's claims of a prior love that the two once shared. Anyway, Miss Lamb tried, but it didn't quite hit the mark for me. I give it 3.5 stars. Parts of this book really dragged and I felt like I was rereading the same thing repeatedly. In other sections of the book, the story seemed a bit stagnant

Sacks, a neurologist and author of the popular The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat ( LJ 2/15/86), developed a serious interest in sign language and deafness after reviewing Harlan Lane's When the Mind Hears ( LJ 10/15/84 ) for the New York Review of Books . In this work, Sacks explores all facets of the deaf world--he meets with deaf people and their families and visits schools for the deaf, spending a good deal of time at Gallaudet University. As he writes, "I had now to see them in a new, 'ethnic light,' as people with a distinctive language, sensibility, and culture of their own." The work is divided into three broad sections, throughout which there are numerous, somewhat distracting footnote "excursions." Although there is a wealth of insight and information here, the book tends to drag for the average reader and may disappoint fans of Sacks's previous best seller. Recommended for scholars and graduate collections.

I'm seeing this book constantly compared to Sacks' "Hat" even though this work is in a completely different style. First of all, this is only on people who are deaf and their culture, while the title of Hat has "and other Clinical Tales" at the end. This book is in a similar style to Musicophilia and Awakenings, it takes on one subject and explores it in depth. So, while you don't get the varied clinical stories, you get a deep view on people who are deaf.
Although I agree with some other reviewers that the footnotes are tedious to read (my edition has them at the back of the book so there was a lot of flipping), it is, as always, an easily readable and informative text on the subject. I love how Sacks, through this and all his books, focuses on how people adapt to their "disabilities" even though they are seen as less than normal in our culture at large and makes you realize that they are not disabled, but differently abled, capable of everything "normal" people are.

Seeing what makes us human.

Looking at language without speech is mind blowing. Without language we do not share in human culture. We do not "think" without language. I truly believe that everyone should find the experiences of the deaf important and interesting on an emotional and intellectual level. This book was a great start for me.
While this book is dated, Oliver Sacks shares very valuable experiences by deaf people. He reviews some of the personal struggles of the deaf, their historic treatment by hearing people, some history of sign language, and the development of Deaf culture. It is helpful that Oliver Sacks starts initially from his own ignorance. He walks us through well researched insights, and he brilliantly lights our understanding of human thinking that comes from language development.

A door to the world of the Deaf

As a hearing person, I must admit that I never gave much thought at all to the Deaf, let alone Deaf culture. Sacks' Seeing Voices is a real eye opener in this regard. Sacks admits that he came at the problem of deafness from a medical/neurological perspective, and was quickly and radically changed by what he learned about the Deaf. Sacks passion is evident as he takes the reader through the history of Deaf culture, the struggles and successes of the Deaf. I now have a new appreciation of the Deaf, and their place in society, and their unique difficulties. This has opened a new channel in my mind, one which I intend to explore more fully in the future.

This volume consists of lectures delivered during my tenure of the Chair of Poetry at Oxford and not included in Shakespearean Tragedy. Most of them have been enlarged, and all have been revised. As they were given at intervals, and the majority before the publication of that book, they contained repetitions which I have not found it possible wholly to remove. Readers of a lecture published by the University of Manchester on English Poetry and German Philosophy in the Age of Wordsworth will pardon also the restatement of some ideas expressed in it.

The several lectures are dated, as I have been unable to take account of most of the literature on their subjects published since they were delivered.

They are arranged in the order that seems best to me, but it is of importance only in the case of the four which deal with the poets of Wordsworth's time.

About the Author
Andrew Cecil Bradley was born in 1851 in Cheltenham. He was the son of a clergyman and the younger brother of the philosopher F.H. Bradley. He received his education at Cheltenham College and at Balliol College, Oxford, where he became a fellow in 1874, lecturing in Philosophy and English. In 1882 Bradley became the first Professor of Literature and History at Liverpool, and later on Professor of English Language and Literature at Glasgow from 1890, and Professor of Poetry at Oxford from 1901 until 1906, when he retired from academic life.

The master critic on Shakespeare, Keats, Shelley, Wordsworth

This set of essays by the master Shakespeare critic A.C. Bradley contains essays on :Poetry for Poetry's Sake, The Sublime, Hegel's Theory of Tragedy, Wordsworth, Shelley's View of Poetry, The Long Poem in the Age of Wordsworth, The Letters of Keats, The Rejection of Falstaff, Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra, Shakespeare the Man, Shakespeare's Theatre and Audience.
I especially enjoyed the essay on Keats where Bradley focuses on the meaning of Beauty in Keats' letters. His appreciation of the remarkable character of Keats and how this is reflected both in the Letters and the Poems is instructive. The essay on Shakespeare the Man I found a bit speculative , yet another attempt to say something about the character of the character who mastered and made so many different characters. It is interesting that Bradley believes that Shakespeare is the poet who best exemplified Keats' prescription for what a poet ideally should be, one whose negative capability means he is within and without all the characters he creates. The essay on Wordsworth focuses on his originality especially in finding in the simplicities of daily life, and in simple characters the deepest expressions of human soul.
But there is much more than I have indicated here . This is a classic set of essays by one of the English literary traditions, most important critics.

A C Bradley at his best

I am a fan of the writings of A C Bradley, in my mind the finest critic of William Shakespeare. As opposed to "Shakesperean Tragedy". his epic, this book contains criticism of authors other than Shakespeare, although his criticism of Anthony and Cleopatra is superb. Any one who enjoys Shakesperean criticism will, I think, find much to enjoy in this book.

Duncan/Prasse's Veterinary Laboratory Medicine book offers an easy to understand flow of laboratory changes in domestic animals, with an emphasis on their differences (cat, dog, horse, cattle). Their sections on systems (urinary, digestive system, liver, muscle, endocrine) are very helpful in organizing thought processes. There are also 28 cases in the back of the book to reinforce the learning objectives. Highly recommended for the student
