Best introductory book on Vastu.

All of Dr. Svoboda's books are filled with deep wisdom brought forth through direct teacher-student relationship, study of the texts, and experience. This book is no exception, and could probably be his best book yet on Vedic sciences in general (Ayurveda, Jyotisham). Vastu: Breathing Life into Space is the only book of its kind in Vastu shastra literature.
Dr. Svoboda transcends the many lists of rules and other injunctions (which are included but communicated in a digestible manner), and instead focuses on sensitizing the reader via the true understanding of space and its qualities (the elements). I highly recommend this book be the first to read if you want to learn the art and science of Vastu. It incorporates Ayurveda, Yoga, and Vedic Astrology with practical examples both ancient and modern, with the clear intention of harmonizing human culture with the environment, so that it may be at Peace with itself and all life.

This is a fantastic book on Vaastu.

Robert Svoboda does it again. This is an amazingly dense yet very readable treatise on Vaastu. You will learn so much. Svoboda makes clear the background and periphery that are essential to understanding and correctly utilizing the principles of Vaastu. A must-have for any serious student or practitioner.

The flow of space

Vastu is a great for those who love space but don't have any background in how to flow in space with furniture, color or objects filling the space. The book allows you to place yourself in your space to listen in it, to feel it, to be with it. Robert E Svoboda is a great writer the other book I am currently and always reading is greatness of Saturn. If you are a practitioner of Ayurveda and learning about subtle energy these are great knowledge that translates from the Vedas

Highly opinionated and superficial

Blah. Joyner uses the preface to justify the book's obvious shortcomings: "It is comparatively economical in price and size. That's the reason for it's length, the lack of companion CDs, lyrics, and color photographs. Paper, copyright permissions, and color printing cost a lot of money." So be aware, this is a low-budget item in various respects. It's just barely substantial enough for a school to get away with telling parents and the district BoE that the subject was taught. If you want something that does more than scratch the surface, or provides more than the absolute minimum of textbook production value, look elsewhere. The British Invasion deserves more than 9 pages plus a couple of song analyses.

One might think that, given the apparent importance of brevity, Mr. Joyner would skew the ratio of fact and opinion more in the direction of fact, particularly when some of the opinions he expresses are utterly misguided. To wit: "Stadium rock continued through the 1980s with bands such as Styx, Rush, Boston, Kansas, and Heart. The music of these bands was inherently formulaic and corporate and would lead to major underground rebellions along the way with musical styles such as disco, punk, and grunge."

Rush's music is formulaic and corporate? Disco was a rebellion against bands like Styx or Kansas? Such assertions throw every other opinion in the text into doubt. Also, the famous 3-song Yes album is titled "Close To The Edge", not "Closer To The Edge". Let's call that one a typo, but speaking of that band, it's a strange editorial decision to make the heading of the section about them "Rick Wakeman and Yes". Why put it that way? Rick's a legend, but to suggest that he was the primary source of Yes's prog sound is a real stretch. "Roundabout", which is arguably the band's most popular classic progressive rock song, features some great playing by Wakeman, but it was composed by Jon Anderson and Steve Howe. Many of Yes's records don't even feature Wakeman as a band member, and his solo efforts made far less of a contribution to the progressive rock genre than the band that made him famous, let alone King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Genesis, etc.

The edition I have is called the "Jersey City Edition" but in the section about jazz-rock fusion there is no mention of one of the absolute founding fathers of the genre, guitarist Al DiMeola, who is from Jersey City. Also unseen in the text is PM Dawn, a couple of Jersey City boys whose contribution to hip-hop is worth at least a sentence or two.

The writing is decent. The artists and styles that are mentioned are certainly essential. But I have reservations about recommending this book for classroom use, and certainly not for personal education.

This book does not look bad at all. It seems to provide a more or less thorough history of american popular music. It is organized and would be a good study guide. The first edition came out in 1993, so all or most of the information in this volume cannot have just been ripped off the web.

American Popular Music

The Joyner book an excellent survey of popular music. I chose it for a college general survey course on popular music I taught in Sping 10--it was a great class and the students reacted well to the book. Joyner treats each genre of popular music in a chronological manner, showing their development and influence on each another. The section on courtry music is especially interesting. ITunes links are provided to songs covered in the text. A number of the ITunes links are not the same arrangements discussed in the text, but they are easy enough to track down. I give this book a high recommendation, especially to anyone looking for a general overview of American popular music.

1. INTRODUCTION
Structural members subjected to axial compressive loads are often called by names identifying their functions. Of these, the best-known are columns, the main vertical compression members in a building frame. Other common compression members include chords in trusses and bracing members in frames.

The selection of a particular shape for use as a compression member depends on the type of structure, the availability, and the connection methods. Load-carrying capacity varies approximately inversely with the slenderness ratio, so stiff members are generally required. Rods, bars, and plates, commonly used as tension members, are too slender to be used as compression members unless they are very short or lightly loaded.

For building columns, W shapes having nominal depths of 14 in or less are commonly used. These sections, being rather square in shape, are more efficient than others for carrying compressive loads. (Deeper sections are more efficient as beams.) Pipe sections are satisfactory for small or medium loads. Pipes are often used as columns in long series of windows, in warehouses, and in basements and garages. In the past, square and rectangular tubing saw limited use, primarily due to the difficulty in making bolted or riveted connections at the ends. Modern welding techniques have essentially eliminated this problem.

Built-up sections are needed in large structures for very heavy loads that cannot be supported by individual rolled shapes. For bracing and compression members in light trusses, single-angle members are suitable. However, equal-leg angles may be more economical than unequal-leg angles because their least radius of gyration values are greater for the same area of steel. For top chord members of bolted roof trusses, a pair of angles (usually unequal legs, with long legs back-to-back to give a better balance between the radius of gyration values about the x-and y-axes) are used with or without gusset plates. In welded roof trusses, where gusset plates are unnecessary, structural tees are used as top chord members.

I highly recommend buying a separate construction study guide

I gave it three stars because I took the Construction Depth exam, and this reference has very little construction information. I highly recommend buying a separate construction study guide. However, this reference was quite useful to me during the morning exam for the non-construction problems.

HUGE reference, and it has way more information than you would need for any PE exam. I do not recommend using this as a study guide (except for the example problems), just a pure reference like the design standards. Once you narrow down the sections specific to your exam, the material is very useful. Some of the problems were representative of the exam, and others were so complex, they could never be solved in the average 6 minutes per problem (at least not by me). It is good to work those more complex problems for your depth area, so you have a better understanding of the topic. For the exam though, you might have to do two or three steps of those really complex problems.

WHY WOULD I BUY THIS BOOK!?!?

Hold on a second . . . I'm confused why anyone is even buying this book other than just wanting to expand their personal library!

First off, from the 13th edition to the 14th edition the only code that updated is the AASHTO that went from 2010 to 2012. All the others (ACI 318, ACI 530, AISC, ASCE 7, IBC, and NDS) stayed the exact same as the 13th edition! AND even though the AASHTO code was updated it is STILL out of date of the current NCEES PE Exam tested material. Here's a link to NCEES design codes tested for the Civil/Structural:

Good for Teens and young adults

Guaranteed Success is a good book for a young adult. Somewhat of a workbook. It really gives you a semi close up view of what it takes to achieve your goals in life. Hands down- this was one of the best books I've read.

Like many youths at the time, I was heavily influenced by hip-hop music and culture of the late 90's. Through this book, Master P has mastered the way to inspire generation hip hop (no pun intended).

The book succeeds as the content is focused more on aiding the reader in his or her quest to success than simply a biography of P's life. Although Master P has shaken his former Ice Cream Man image, he has an extremely motivating rags to riches story and uses this personal journey as a backdrop to encourage and help the reader find his or her own path.

The kicker is that in this book you write just as much as you read. Yes, you actually WRITE in the book. Through stimulating questions, Master P challenges the reader to provide written answers to various questions that were instrumental in his personal success. Through these written answers, readers have no choice but to 1)self reflect 2) identify key areas for personal growth and 3) determine what's hindering his or her journey to success.

As a member of generation Hip Hop, this is definitely one of the best motivational books I've read to date... but you don't have to take my word for it #readingrainbow.

Analysis, Synthesis, and Perception of Musical Sounds contains a detailed treatment of basic methods for analysis and synthesis of musical sounds, including the phase vocoder method, the McAulay-Quatieri frequency-tracking method, the constant-Q transform, and methods for pitch tracking with several examples shown. Various aspects of musical sound spectra such as spectral envelope, spectral centroid, spectral flux, and spectral irregularity are defined and discussed. One chapter is devoted to the control and synthesis of spectral envelopes. Two advanced methods of analysis/synthesis are given: "Sines Plus Transients Plus Noise" and "Spectrotemporal Reassignment" are covered. Methods for timbre morphing are given. The last two chapters discuss the perception of musical sounds based on discrimination and multidimensional scaling timbre models.

About the Author

James W. Beauchamp has been working in the area of analysis, synthesis, and perception of musical sounds for over 40 years. He is editor and co-author of Music by Computers (Wiley, 1969), a fellow of the Audio Engineering Society and of the Acoustical Society of America, former president and board member of the International Computer Music Association, and has published numerous papers in the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society, the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, the Computer Music Journal, Proceedings of the International Computer Music Conference, Proceedings of the International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition, Proceedings of the International Society of Musical Acoustics, and Proceedings of the IEEE Workshop on Applicatiions of Signal Processing to Audio and Acoustics. For over thirty years at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign he taught courses on musical acoustics, electronic music, and computer music (in the School of Music) and audio engineering, electronic music synthesis, and acoustics (in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering). During spring, 1988 he was a visiting scholar at the Center for Research in Music and Acoustics at Stanford University, and during 1994-95 he was a visiting researcher at the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics and Music in Paris. His research interests have been in electronic and computer music synthesis systems, analysis, synthesis, and perception of musical instrument sounds, automatic pitch detection, and instrument separation.

Excellent book on audio signal processing & musical timbre

Covers both the "classic" techniques and some very recent advances in the analysis, modification and synthesis of musical sounds. The chapters on the psychoacoustics of musical timbre are excellent. I've got virtually every available book in the general area of audio signal processing and musical psychoacoustics, and this one is clearly the best so far. Chapters are contributed by several different authors. They provide both a clear review or summary of each topic and some cutting-edge "goodies" describing recent research and techniques in areas such re-synthesis of transients and noise, frequency tracking, and sound morphing.

Discovering the Beauty of Musical Sound: A Must-Have for Music Signal Processing Novice and Expert

This book covers a major area of music signal processing, namely analysis, synthesis and perception (AS&P) of musical sound. The book is nicely written by leading experts in this field and coherently organized. In the analysis part, the authors provide important tools for investigating the internal structure of musical sound. These tools also serve as important feature extractors for content-based music information retrieval (such as multimedia search). The synthesis part is a nice extension for analysis. First, because analysis and synthesis are essentially always connected in concept and practice of Music DSP (such as "analysis by synthesis"), the synthesis part in this book is naturally part of the core arsenal of sound analysis. Second, musical sound synthesis has its own applications, the same as speech synthesis. The perception part is also nicely written and provides complete examples of cognition experiments with a summary of experimental results.

This book is important for graduate students, academic researchers, and industry developers working in the field of music signal processing. Besides covering the fundamentals of music SP, this book clearly outlines current research frontiers (and open problems). The algorithms are clearly illustrated and many have readily available implementations. I feel the majority of the available books on music SP are too close to speech SP (or they treat music SP as a "recent" extension from speech SP). This book is unique because it is specifically targeted to music (as the editor points out in the preface, music SP also has a very long research tradition). Another reason that I find this book appealing is that the most essential tools can be learned and implemented quickly. The book is edited in a consistent narrative style so it is easy to navigate. The depth in most chapters is masterfully arranged so the basics are covered first and then the advanced materials are included. I think this "structure" feature is important because it relieves the readers from having to perform extensive literature search themselves while maintaining easy readability.

Concise, Accurate, Comprehensive, Logical, Practical.

I have been using this book on and off for the last 3 years, and intensely for the last year and a half, as part of my Ph.D. dissertation in Engineering and Applied Science---Physics. I have used directly only the first chapter, the only one written by the Editor, James W. Beauchamp. I've glanced through the rest of it, but my review is largely based on this first chapter.

Professor Beauchamp's organization and presentation of the material is amazingly clear and logical. This becomes more apparent when one considers (recent) literature on this very specialized field, acoustical digital signal processing (DSP). That been said, the material is not easy to grasp for the reader not familiar with DSP and acoustics fundamentals. The mathematical theory has a natural hierarchical structure and every single equation in the first chapter is justified. I could be hard-pressed to single out one equation or concept that does not add considerable value to this product.

I particularly enjoyed the deliberate emphasis on the interdisciplinarity of the subject. DSP, acoustics theory (both from a physics and an engineering perspective), and psychoacoustics all blend well, their parts carefully weighted to give the reader a working knowledge of each part's contribution. Intuitive as this may sound, it is not common practice in the general acoustics DSP literature. It takes a person with immense practical experience and theoretical background to achieve that. Professor Beauchamp's central role in this space is grounded on years of relevant teaching at the Univ. of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) as well as his expertise on practical applications of this material.

Everything presented in the first chapter can be readily applied using Dr. Beauchamp's free software, SNDAN, on both Windows/DOS and Unix platforms, and can be found here . Once downloaded, the user can push his acoustic signals (saved as .wav files) by calling one of two functions, the Phase Vocoder analysis, or the McAuley-Quatieri analysis. Even though this is not a GUI application, the commands are sequential in the sense that once you upload the .wav file and chose which method you want to run, the DOS prompt asks you what you want to do next, like, for example, plot certain harmonics (only fundamental, or a weighted average of the first harmonics based on psychoacoustical experiments), spectral irregularity (corresponding to a feeling of "jaggedness"), normalized spectral centroid (corresponding to the percieved quality of sound brightness), amplitude or frequency over time, amplitude vs. frequency, amplitude vs. frequency over time (3-D plots), musical pitch vs. time (actual musical tones), and more. Another capability is raw calculation of fomulas presented in the first chapter of the book, like for example spectral centroid averages (so you can compare your signal to the perceived brightness of certain instruments), or the linear regression equation of a suggested analysis frequency for the Phase Vocoder method. Another notable feature is its ability to manipulate the signal by substituting certain spectral regions with root mean squares or weighted or straight averages of the same spectrum, apply filetring, smoothing, and being able to export the data as a raw ASCII file for further manipulation in other software like MATLAB, SAS, or R. Yet another cabability is its smart re-synthesizing of manipulated signals, something i have not had the chance to explore yet. As a matter of fact, SNDAN is so flexible, that it can be of as much use to the practicing sound engineer as it can be to the researching/teaching professor or graduate student. An ideal tool for sound lab demos and practice. If you download SNDAN and run your data through it, you will see so many interesting pictures of your signal, you will be tempted to buy the book so you can understand their meaning. And the first chapter of the book does justice to the peice of software. By the way, the rest of the chapters are not implementable in SNDAN.

The rest of the chapters feature well-established names, like Dr. Judith C. Brown (inventor of the Q-transform). I have not worked with timbre, but from what little i know, it seems like the treatment is as comprehensive as it is cutting-edge [three (3) out of a total of eight (8) chapters dedicated to it]. Fundamental frequency estimation, sound synthesis, spectral envelopes as additive models, and data reduction is some other topics covered.

The book is concise and can be read as a stand-alone source, the information is accurate and up-to-date, economical yet comprehensive, the material throughout is presented logically, and the theory is readily applied using the author's software, SNDAN. A wonderful and needed publication in the field of acoustical DSP, indeed.

“In the latest installment from Zenith Books' ‘At War’ series, author Cory Graff has compiled a nice concise history of the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt in World War Two. While there are quite a few books that deal with the subject matter, few offer a balanced look at the aircraft from its pre-war development through its post-war service and still provide an interesting perspective to its development and operations through the war in all theaters of operations.

"The author provides operational highlights from Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific. The title is also well-illustrated with a good mixture of period color photographs, a few contemporary color photographs, and numerous black and whites from combat photographers. Some of the photos have appeared in other titles, but there are some nice shots in this book that I haven't seen available previously. There are some nice color shots of Thunderbolts operated by the Mexican and Brazilian Air Forces as part of Allied operations in Europe.

About the Author

Cory Graff is the Military Aviation Historian at the Flying Heritage Collection museum in Everett, Washington. In his free time, he works on aviation-related history projects, including exhibits and books. His articles have been published in Air & Space Smithsonian magazineand the Museum of Flight's Aloft magazine. Graff is the author of five previous aviation books, including Shot to Hell: The Stories and Photos of Ravaged WWII Warbirds, Strike and Return: American Air Power and the Fight for Iwo Jima, and P-47 Thunderbolt at War. He lives in Seattle, Washington.

Fascinating reading

I just finished reading this fine book about the P-47. It was written by an author who truly respected the abilities of this large and powerful fighter plane. The author gives background information about the pedigree of the P-47 with interesting narrative about Alexander de Seversky and Alexander Kartveli, the men who produced the design and the plane, men born in the same area in Russia and emigrated to the US. The P-47 ancestors included a variety of Seversky aircraft leading to the P-35. This company became Republic and produced the P-43 and the the P-47. Most of the rest of the book deals about the building of the P-47 followed by its introduction into the military and its use in the ETO and the Pacific as well as it use during World War II by France, Brazil and Mexico (as well as Britain and USSR). Mention was made of post-WWII use by France, Yugoslavia and many Latin American countries This was a book that I couldn't put down. It was well written, well illustrated and very enjoyable reading.

There have been other valuable sources of information on the P-47. Warren Bodie's 1994 book is the "gold standard" and is more academic, much more encyclopedic, and better illustrated. This does not detract from Cory Graff's book which although less complete, is more enjoyable reading for the readers generally interested in World War II and aviation.

William Hess (1994) and Roger Freeman (1978) have interesting and well illustrated books. Squadron is coming out with a P-47 in Action publication which will probably be great for those interested in the identification of the different P-47 models and colors.

Again, I found "P-47 Thunderbolt at War" enjoyable to read and recommend it highly.

Excellent P-47 book

This book tells the story of the mighty "Thunderbolt" the way it deserves to be told, with lots of dramatic description, harrowing tales, and relevant, well-written technical and historical background. It's definitely the best P-47 book I've read.

Graff has a knack for uncovering and presenting the vivid details and backstories that made the P-47 unique. Beginning with company creator Alexander de Seversky (a rebellious, one-legged, exiled Russian war hero, no less) and designer Alexander Kartveli (former circus trapeze artist and math teacher), he relates how the US Army's seemingly unattainable wish list for a new fighter resulted in a plane that became the choice of 17 out of America's 21 top-scoring fighter aces.

Jaw-dropping pilots' recollections are interwoven throughout, graphically illustrating just how tough and powerful this beast of a plane was. There is a four page interview with retired Col. Steve N. Pisanos, who became an ace while he flew the P-47 with the 4th Fighter Group. Since Pisanos also flew the Spitfire and the P-51, his account of the "seven ton monster" in battle is especially insightful.

At 128 pages, the book does a surprisingly thorough job of covering the P-47 in combat as fighter, escort, and fighter-bomber in Europe, Africa and the Pacific. Graff sticks to topic, and each anecdote makes a point. Unique among P-47 books is an engaging account of the factory workers who produced the plane.

If you're looking for a good tech manual, this isn't it, although there is a 16 page "nuts and bolts" chapter. Essential characteristics are clearly detailed, accompanied by graphics, and related to the plane's performance in battle.

Every page has at least one image, and many have two or three. There is a good variety of color and black and white photographs, drawings, posters, and cartoons. The images are mostly from private collections, the National Archives, and the Museum of Flight, where the author is a curator. Far from being just stuck in (as is way too common in aviation writing), they add to the text nicely, making the book all the more entertaining and informative.

Good Introduction to the P-47 Thunderbolt!

'Jug' fans will want to add Cory Graff's P-47 book to their World War II bookshelves. There are a number of Thunderbolt books out there - Warren Bodie's is the very best - but Graff's comprehensive, well-illustrated summary is hard to beat in terms of an introduction to Republic's heavyweight fighter.

To be honest, if you've already read a lot of books on the P-47, there's not much new in P-47 THUNDERBOLT AT WAR in terms of text or photos. However the main selling point of the book is that it brings together all aspects of the P-47's career - development, stateside production, WWII service in all theaters and postwar use - under one cover and illustrates that with a wealth of photographs.

On the other hand, the book's title is P-47 THUNDERBOLT AT WAR. I was disappointed there weren't more pages on its war record and less on production, etc.

Though most of the photographs in the book have been seen previously, Graff's book brings them together to the tune of over 110 black & white and 50 color shots. Add to that mix an interview with 4th FG ace Steve Pisanos and you're getting great value for a price tag of $19.95!

for smooth integration - quick read

The book emphasises an easy integration with common popular tools like SVN, CVS and git. Though I suspect that git is now the most popular, the others are described in the text for completeness. This also include using Jenkins with Eclipse, which surely many of you use for java coding.

There are many screen captures of key steps using Jenkins. Good. But what it also does mean is that the text is necessarily a little skimpy on details. It is a short book to begin with, and the screen captures comprise over half the pages.

Chapter 4 on automated deployment is where a lot of value lies in using Jenkins. The idea is to make a simple automated process that your group can rapidly adapt to. The automation removes much of the manual steps that would otherwise be needed. Less error prone in and of itself. Handy given that a lot of your effort is in fixing bugs, and you do not want your development process to be brittle, which manual steps can induce.

Automated Deployment, Build Pipeline plug ins, Hosted Jenkins concepts are attractive points addressed in the book.

Step by step screen shots are given for each and every process of continuous build and continuous integration. It makes a book more reader friendly with image support.

Good book for DevOps Beginners

Flow digrams for continuous integration and delivery are explained in good manner. Build pipeline plugin is explained in easy manner which helps to create end to end pipeline of builds for continuous integration and continuous delivery.

Interesting part of the book was the way useful plugins have been explained with screenshots. CloudBees and Redhat's hosted Jenkins offerings are also explained in a detailed manner.

About the Author
Walter A. Rutes lives in Scottsdale, Arizona

Richard Penner, professor at the Hotel School at Cornell University since 1970, teaches hotel planning, development, and interior design. Experienced in both architecture and hotel management, he spent year-long sabbaticals with international designer Hirsch Bedner Associates (Santa Monica, CA) and the architecture group of Starwood Hotels and Resorts (White Plains, NY). A graduate of Cornell University, with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture, he is the author of four books―two coauthored with the late Walter Rutes, who was the lead author on the first edition of Hotel Design, Development, and Planning. In 1992 Hospitality Design magazine honored Penner with its Platinum Circle Award for contributions to hospitality design as an author and teacher. He has presented seminars on development, hotel planning, and interior design throughout the world. He has served a three-year term as Director of Graduate Studies at the Hotel School, has been conference coordinator for design seminars at the European Meeting on Hotel Interior Design in Rimini, Italy, and has chaired five Hospitality Design Roundtables sponsored by the Center for Hospitality Research at Cornell.

Lawrence Adams, AIA, Vice President of ForrestPerkins, has managed and directed the design of large-scale development projects at major architectural and planning firms over the last thirty-five years. A global authority on hotel and resort design, Mr. Adams served as adjunct faculty at New York University for nine years teaching graduate courses on Hotel Design and Development. He also co-authored Hotel Design, Planning and Development (2001) with Walter Rutes and Richard Penner. Among his most significant projects are the New York Four Seasons Hotel, the RIGHA Royal Hotel, Chambers Hotel, The Westin Beach Resort & Spa, Fort Lauderdale, and the National Headquarters of the Marine Corps Reserve.

Perfect !!

I was assigned to teach at the Master Degree class on "Facility Management" subject focusing on Hotel Facility. I have gone through several books regarding hotel design. I think this book is the best of all. Any designer who reads this book back to back will certainly understand the whole concept. It is not only about how to design the hotel as an architecture piece, but the reader will also understand the hospitality business. This book also covers the design and management issues of related topics such as "Restaurant", "Entertainment Venue" in the hotel. It is the 'must have' for all architects who want to design a hotel efficiently. It can also be a good book for anyone who is in the hospitality business and currently in charge of renovating or upgrading the hotel space; or the hotel's representative who need to communicate with architects or interior designer. This book can be the great tool to evaluate the result of the hotel construction project or even to 'correct' it. The tables and formulas for space calculation in this book are easy enough for anyone to understand. This book can be of great use to all building design professionals. It can also be a valuable one for any people who is interested in hotel business.

The Most Outstanding Resource for Hotel Architecture!

The work of hotel design and planning is different from other architectural works; it requires an indepth understanding of hotel business. Therefore, the hotel architecture became one of the toughest job for architects. (Another job is the hospital architecture.)

However, this book proposed design guidelines for a hotel fit to the business pattern. First, it explains various types of hotel properties. Second, it shows not only design guidelines for facilities but also planning approach methods for location selecting and size determination. Finally, if you read this book, you can consider efficient management system of the property from the early phase of design.

Among numerous books on hotel architecture, I think this book is the most outstanding resource.

Absolutely terrific!!

WOW! I have a copy of the 1980s version of Rutes and Penner--this is a totally new edition, all new photography, etc.--and consider it the 'Bible' for hotel design. But the new edition is twice as big and full of current examples and information. It has 32 pages of gorgeous color photos of great hotels and resorts from around the world. The text is in three main sections: Hotel Types (downtown, resorts, conference centers, luxury hotels, casino hotels, etc.); Design Guide (planning and design information for all areas of the hotel); and Development Guide (feasibility, programming, future trends). In addition, there are lots of appendices and sidebars from such people as Ian Schrager, I.M. Pei, Robert Stern, and John Portman. I've looked at other hotel design books in the stores and there isn't anything that is so complete or current. There are other books on boutique hotels, with lots of pictures, but nothing with this global coverage of all types of lodging properties. With well over 400 pages, this book will be the new Bible for hotel design. I can't imagine a better choice for anyone involved with the hotel development, architecture, or interior design.
