About the Author
Donald C. Rizzo is professor emeritus at Marygrove College in Detroit, Michigan, where he taught Human Anatomy and Physiology and Medical Terminology. He also taught Biology II: The Unity and Diversity of Life, Principles of Biology, Parasitology, Zoology, and Botany. He conducted biological fieldwork around the globe. Dr. Rizzo began his teaching career at Marygrove College in 1974 and served as chairperson of the Science and Mathematics department from 1975--2006. His numerous awards include the 2010 Marygrove College Presidential Award for Service, the 2009 Marygrove College Presidential Award for Scholarship, 2006 Marygrove College Presidential Award for Teaching, 1992 Marygrove College Teacher Scholar Award and the 1990 Sears Roebuck Foundation Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award. Dr. Rizzo has published in the JOURNAL OF INVERTEBRATE PATHOLOGY and coauthored a computerized test bank for medical terminology. Along with two colleagues, he has presented at national and international conferences on the interdisciplinary service learning course "HIV/AIDS: Its Biological and Social Impact." In addition, he incorporates service learning into all the courses he teaches. Dr. Rizzo received his B.A. in biology and education in 1968 from Boston State College (now the University of Massachusetts at Boston), his M.S. in 1970 and his Ph.D. in 1973 from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Great for learning all about the human body.

Professor teaching anatomy and physiology uses this for the course. Very though book with pictures. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to learn about the human body.

Helpful, but could be better

This workbook was very helpful in preparing for each of the chapter quizzes that I had to take. I would have given it five stars but there was one annoying aspect of the book. When doing the "completion" exercises there was never enough room given to actually write the answers down. Even in cases where giving more room to fill in the answer wouldn't have made the sentence go into another line. If this could be fixed in the next edition it would be an even better book.

A classic. Perfect for fans of DuMaurier

Jamaica Inn by the English writer Daphne du Maurier is a classic. The story begins with 20 year-old Mary Yellan making her way to Jamaica Inn in a horse drawn coach, the darkness of the moors and the beating rain making her very anxious.

Mary lived on a farm in Helford but had to leave after her mother died. As she was dying she asked Mary to go live with her Aunt Patience at Jamaica Inn. The journey to her aunt is anything but comforting.

Upon arrival Mary finds her aunt a different person fro the sparkling, witty laughing woman she remembered. Aunt Patience seems aged 50 years and mutters constantly. She is clearly frightened of something and Mary comes to realize very quickly what, or shall I say who, is the reason. Mary’s Uncle Joss is a wicked man and he has illegal business affairs right there at the inn.

The plot follows a group of murderous wreckers, Joss seemingly one who is in charge. They run ships aground using lanterns on the shore and kill the sailors then steal the cargo. Jamaica Inn is never open to the public yet every few weeks men come in the dark of the night, silently unloading carts of merchandise they have stolen from the wrecked ships.

Mary foolishly becomes attracted to Joss’s younger brother, Jem. She realizes Jem does not have anything to do with her uncle’s murderous business although he is a horse thief.

One day Mary decides to track her uncle across the moors so she can report the lot of them to the law. But it gets dark earlier than she thought it would and Mary is stranded, cold and wet and alone in the dark. Miraculously a horse drawn buggy comes along and she is rescued. Francis Davey, an albino vicar who lives in the next village, picks Mary up and takes her to his home. She tells the vicar the improbable tale of her uncle’s business expecting him to help her. He instead points out some weak points in her story and suggests she is letting her imagination get away from her.

There is much more but if you haven’t read Du Maurier’s classic, I don’t want to give away the rest of the story. Soon I would like to read her other popular book, Rebecca.

What would you like to eat if you were arriving on a damp, cold wintery evening to a near deserted inn on the moors? I would want a hot brisket dinner and loads of tea! That's what I was inspired to prepare after reading this book. (Photos are on my website)

Too long winded

After reading Daphne DuMaurier's later novels and short stories, I found Jamaica Inn a bit too long-winded. There are so many verbose descriptions of the landscape, the sea, the moors, the weather... and although DuMaurier was very good at creating mood, I think these descriptions may have taken away from the excellent characters and plot. It was one of her earlier works, though, so perhaps Ms. DuMaurier may have agreed with me on this. :)

An excellent gothic suspense from one of the genre's best

With the passing of her mother, young Mary Yellan goes to live with her aunt and uncle at their establishment, the Jamaica Inn, only to find out it’s a hotbed of smuggling… and far worse. Her uncle is one of the area's wreckers -- dangerous men who lure ships to crash along the shore, killing the crew/passengers and looting whatever washes up on shore.

Du Maurier was the master of the 20th-Century gothic, and imbues this novel with a thick sinister atmosphere and feeling of impending dread. It reads like an authentic Victorian-era gothic, but is also more well-written than most old gothics. Mary is a capable protagonist, strong and independent despite her fears, and her relationship with two locals proves to be a major secondary plot-point. All in all, an impressive work of suspense some eighty years after du Maurier penned it, and well worth reading.

About the Author

ELIZABETH F. BARKLEY is professor of music at Foothill College in Los Altos, California. She is a nationally known scholar, educator, and consultant and has been the recipient of several honors, including The Chair Academy's Outstanding Leadership Award for work with learning outcomes assessment and being named California's Higher Education Professor of the Year by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Research on effective teaching at the college and university level emphasizes the following components says this book:

"1. Identify and communicating clear learning goals and outcomes
2. Helping students achieve these goals through activities that promote active, engaged learning
3. Analyzing, reporting, and reflecting upon results in ways that lead to continued improvement"

This book outlines 50 Learning Assessment Techniques which allows faculty to assess the effectiveness of their teaching. These techniques are identified for traditional, online, collaborative, and flipped classes and classroom. A professor can get ideas on assessment techniques which may work best for the kind of classroom he or she teaches.

For example, one technique I liked for an economics classroom - which my son teaches at a liberal arts college - was a creative Nomination assignment. Students research the Nobel Economics prize criteria, do research on outstanding Economists, and write a profile on the Economist describing why that Economist would qualify for the prize. Could work for other disciplines, too, such as medicine. This assignment was under the "human dimension" category.

This book describes 50 techniques such as this.

Chapter 4 explains how to implement Learning Assessment Techniques, creating assessment rubrics, student and peer evaluation forms and introducing the activity, facilitating, concluding it and other helpful processes. This is really a how-to manual guiding faculty step-by-step in a very organized fashion on how to use these techniques successfully.

Chapter 5 covers analyzing and reporting on what students have learned.

Part Two of this book highlights teaching and assessing for different domains. These domains include: foundational knowledge, application learning, integration, human dimension, caring and learning how to learn domains. Each domain gets its own chapter and covers clarifying learning goals, identifying learning outcomes, aligning learning outcomes and assessing achievement. Then about seven learning assessment techniques are provided for each domain.

For the learning how to learn domain, some sample LAT's include: study outlines, student generated rubrics, invent the quiz, learning goal listing, What? So what? Now What? Journal, Multiple Task Mastery Checklist and Personal Learning Environment. Each chapter is about 40 pages long so is packed with information in this section.

This is an invaluable resource for professors who want to improve engagement, assessment, learning outcomes and reporting for evaluations and even tenure. Assessments are one of the primary ways students learn, so having quality and accurate assessments is imperative. This book has abundant ideas on how to create these for all kinds of teaching styles, objectives and classrooms.

Interesting Resources for Assessing Learning and Promoting Engagement for Student Learning

As a faculty for many years, I am always looking for resources related to assessment and evaluation. I teach a master's level course on this very topic and so good resources for not only helping students but informing my own educational practice is essential. I have said this before in other reviews, but Jossey-Bass is a leading publisher of educational products (I not only use them now as an educator but when I was getting my doctorate, I used a lot of resources from this particular publisher. This resource has a lot of useful charts and examples. There are also a lot of online resources that can be accessed as well besides those in the hardcopy book. There are concepts maps and rubrics, as well as information on the specific learning domains which include knowledge, application, integration, and even the caring domain (which I have to say is a new concept to me but is quite interesting since I teach nursing - a caring curriculum). There is a lot of interesting ideas including assessment and promotion of learning, implementation strategies, and information on how to collect data on student assessment and evaluation that can be used as support for showing positive outcomes that might actually be helpful to the educator for annual professional summaries (yearly performance evaluations) and promotions or tenures. While I am a fan of CATS (classroom assessment activities), this book is more about engagement as well as assessment.

About the Author

Michael Chazan is an associate professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto.

He earned his Ph.D. in anthropology at Yale University.

Before coming to Toronto, Dr. Chazan was a postdoctoral fellow with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris and at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

Among his field experience are excavations in New Jersey, France, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, and South Africa.

Dr. Chazan's publications include a monograph on the Lower Paleolithic site of Holon, Israel, coauthored with Liora Horwitz.

Dr. Chazan is currently engaged in a project on the Earlier Stone Age of South Africa:

Well worth the read for any sci-fi fan

A great story set in the Starcraft universe. An easy stand-alone even for those unfamiliar with the Starcraft univserse and a must for those who are. Easily one of the better works among Blizzard's adapted novels.

Allowing Golden to write the whole series pays off nicely for Blizzard here as it clearly shows in the quality of the story. The series is well-paced, has plenty of action, and incorporates Starcraft lore in a very clean fashion. The necessary and pre-existing Starcraft lore doesn't feels forced and the new lore is introduced in a very neat flow. The action is detailed fairly well and is relatively creative. Compared to Blizzard's other adapted novels, this series is extremely well written and easily one of their best.

Rosemary's story is touched on much more here in the second novel and her flaws and growth as a character by the end of the series easily made her my favorite character. The Protoss story unfolds more as well and begins to cover parts of the history that fans are more familiar with and fans will enjoy learning about the enigmatic Protoss as much as new readers will enjoy learning about this proud race.

Woa, not expecting that.
The first book was fun, but things got real in this one.
Tons of Protoss lore, kinda complex stories, great deep characters introduced, fun battles and plot, and an awesome exciting ending battle; all that makes for a badass read.
Out of the three books in the series this was my personal favourite, surely cause it was the 'middle' book: it has more plot added so it wasn't boring (doesn't feel like an intro or an ending; just a nice plot/action packed book).

One of the best I've read in the entire Starcraft collection for sure; and the best out of the three Dark Templar saga books.

Not a good presentation of agile

PRINCE2 is an awesome Framework but this book is a miserable presentation of agile. I feel like the authors took everything agile that they could find and just dumped it into the book. The reliance on process models is very confusing. Why have the authors of this and the 2009 version not used Process Flow Diagrams. In their absence I constantly have to flip all over the book trying to understand PRINCE2 Agile. The bindings on my 2009 version book and this book are falling apart from the flipping. A flow diagram is a chronological description of a process. That is intuitive. Someone new to PRINCE2 would have a hard time using PRINCE2 based on the process model. What you have offered is just the opposite. As a reference for a current PRINCE2 practitioner or professional it might be OK. Maybe the second edition will be an improvement.

This book is concise, easy to follow, fast paced and well written. It's short, but it has all the information you need to survive on the Internet jungle, and get to the top! I wish I'd had this book a year ago, it would have helped me get my business off the ground much more quickly and recover my losses. The book sounds really difficult to get through, and doesn't look like a definite page turner, but I can assure you that's not the case. He outlines what authority sites are, how to use them and how to make your webpage go up, up and up in ranking when searched for. In essence, this is a war, and the author shows you how to win it.

The techniques illustrated are simple, easy to implement and will get your website up and running in no time. Jules Vincent uses simple terminology and introduces new terms with ease, which makes life easier for people like me who find it difficult to use the Internet to keep up with most businesses. Mr.Vincent is completely on point when he writes "...but in today's digital landscape, playing nice will get you absolutely nowhere. If you want to succeed, you have to treat this as if you are fighting for your life".

Best part is that everything is in a simple language with examples and easy to understand for everyone ranging from newbies to oldies.

Verdict: This book is worth a purchase if you want to earn the big bucks through the internet, which, let's face it, who doesn't? So go ahead, consider this one a small investment.
