Setting the standard for modern biopharmaceutical education, the new Fourth Edition is a completely revised text to reflect the rapid growth in the importance of biopharmaceuticals and the techniques of biotechnologies to modern medicine and the life sciences.  The editors have provided a well-balanced framework for introductory as well as more detailed education in various aspects of pharmaceutical biotechnology and the production, biopharmaceutics, and clinical pharmacology of biotechnology-produced drugs.  The new edition improves upon the strong chapters of previous editions, adding emergent trends and cutting-edge advances as well as new graphic illustrations and new authors.  The textbook includes key concepts at the foundation of the technology relevant for protein therapeutics including molecular biology, production and analysis procedures, formulation development, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, and immunogenicity, as well as chapters dealing with regulatory, economic, and pharmacy practice considerations.

 

The Fourth Edition brings an exciting and fundamental reorganization of the text, now structured into two sections: 1) an initial basic science and general features section; and 2) a section profiling the various therapeutic classes of biologics, including gene therapy.  Additionally, reorganization of the chapters examining the properties and applications of monoclonal antibodies, and oligonucleotides and siRNA has enhanced these important concepts in the text.  A completely new chapter has been added on cell-based technologies.

About the Author

DAAN J.A. CROMMELIN is Professor at the Department of Pharmaceutics at Utrecht University. Until December 2011 he was scientific director of the Dutch Top Institute Pharma in Leiden. He is adjunct professor at the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Utah. Dr. Crommelin is co-founder of OctoPlus, a Leiden based company specialized in the development of pharmaceutical product formulations and advanced drug delivery systems. He published over 335 articles and has held leadership positions at the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) and the European Federation for Pharmaceutical Sciences (EUFEPS).

ROBERT D. SINDELAR is currently President, The Providence Health Care Research Institute, Vice President Research and Academic, Providence Health Care (part of the British Columbia public health care system), Professor Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Associate Dean Research Faculty of Medicine The University of British Columbia (UBC).  He served for 11 years as Dean and Professor, The UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences following 19 years at the University of Mississippi where he held the positions of Professor and Chair of Medicinal Chemistry, School of Pharmacy and served as Interim Dean.  Dr. Sindelar’s expertise lies in medicinal chemistry, computer-aided drug discovery and design, pharmaceutical biotechnology, and creating opportunities to integrate innovation into the health care system.  His research work resulted in significant extramural funding and 70 refereed journal articles, six U.S. patents, and over 100 scientific and professional presentations.  He has been active in promoting the profession of pharmacy and the biotechnology community. Dean Sindelar has helped build a unified vision for the future of pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences education in BC and beyond and has been inducted as a fellow in the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

BERND MEIBOHM is Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy in Memphis. His area of expertise lies in clinical pharmacology and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamics correlations. Dr. Meibohm obtained his doctoral degree in Pharmaceutics from the Technical University Carolo-Wilhelmina, Braunschweig, Germany and received postdoctoral training at the University of Florida, Gainesville. Dr. Meibohm is a fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and the American College of Clinical Pharmacology, and has published three textbooks, more than 90 peer-reviewed research articles and book chapters, 130 abstracts, and over 100 invited scientific presentations to national and international audiences.

This new book is the best current source of information on traffic safety and behavior by a leading authority. Shinar has spent the better part of 20 years every year as a visiting fellow at NHTSA and has taken his international experience and shared it in this compendium. The only other thing that rivals it is Vaa's book and Leonard Evans' work.

Small but powerful

Although this book is small, only 70 pages, it's filled with lots of useful techniques. The pictures are clear and the instructions are easy to follow. A must have especially if you're disabled and need to use a cane.

It’s also great for those who do not need a cane for a disability. The nice thing about learning cane techniques is that you can apply the techniques to something you may come across in time of trouble. Such as a broom/mop handle, stick/limb, etc.

I realize that the contents of this book, concerning practically all aspects of the human body, cannot be free of controversy. It is understandable that experts can point out flaws of arguments and insufficient accuracy of details – I wrote this book with wide the general public in mind.

I would like to turn your attention to the fact that we know very little about our body and its close relationship with the natural environment. Our future life often depends on the method of treatment we choose in a case of a health crisis. In cases when mainstream medicine cannot offer any help, we should remember that there are natural therapies that can prove themselves very effective.

I am deeply convinced that we should be our own advisor and doctor in many situations. We need to attain enough knowledge about the way our body functions to be capable of eliminating the causes of our illness and suffering.

If, as a result of my advice, some people start feeling better, some get cured, and some realize the necessity of health maintenance, the objective of this book will be fulfilled.

I have tried many methods and remedies in my practice and selected those, which are indeed valuable and effective. They are presented here for you to explore. Please use them wisely.

You promote a healthy lifestyle. Have you always been healthy yourself?

I had once liver cirrhosis, caused by improper nutrition administered by my mother-physician. During my childhood, I frequently suffered from constipation. Spinal injuries caused me to lose sensation in my lower limbs for two years.

I would like to know where and how you gained knowledge that you have started sharing with other people?

During my university years, I took part in a scientific expedition to the Far East where I met with Tibetan monks. Their approach to the human body is different and very interesting. I learned some secrets from them that allow diagnosing of disorders from the way people look, walk, or even wear out their shoes. I also became convinced that it is never just a single organ that is ill in a human body. When something causes us pain and we start treating it, we are fighting symptoms and do not address causes. This is why the problem can manifest itself in some other place, causing pain associated with a completely different disease. I do not treat diseases as something concrete. They are just irregularities in our body’s normal functioning

About the Author
Mikhail Tombak, Ph.D. was the head of Center for Health Sciences in Moscow. He extensively studied Tibetan, Chinese and other Oriental alternative medicines, often experimenting on his own body, to become one of the world greatest authorities on health, longevity, and human body in general. He is the author of several books on health, self-help and longevity.

I posted a review 1 year ago and this is my update. I now call this book my health bible. EVERY SINGLE THING THE DR RECOMMENDS IN THIS BOOK HAS WORKED FOR ME and the family and friends I have helped with The Dr's remedies. I live every day by this book. My Mother has stage 4/metastised/terminal cancer, so I spend 2-3 hours a day reading medical journals, researching health & nutrition topics and every new direction has come full circle back to what is recommended in this book. The Dr. presents the solutions but doesn't explain why they work in great detail so you don't get bogged down you just get right to the results. My Mom is in far better health than she was a year ago - she still golfs! UNEDUCATED READERS think it's crap, they're WRONG. After researching like crazy for the last year the why's are now crystal clear. This is NOT mumbo jumbo! ALL OF IT is backed by loads of scientific evidence. Research who he is/his qualifications, then Buy it, Don't judge, Do what he says (none of it can hurt you), and you will see the results too. This former head of the Center for Health Sciences in Moscow will be my Doctor for life!

Don't Know What Happened

When I bought this book probably a year ago there was about 220 reviews, 95% of them were 4 and 5 stars, I don't know how the reviews got all screwed up.

All in all, I'd say this is a great book; it's straightforward and easy to read. There's a lot of information on a lot of different types of diseases and health problems, and how a lot of different foods impact your health. I've read several books on health and fitness(ex. Living Foods for Optimum Health, Stu Mittleman's Slow Burn[Stu is a world-record breaking endurance athlete]) and damn near everything Tombak says coincides with what I've read previously. Some reviews claim he has no scientific backup, but it's kind of on the cover, next to his name, where it says "Ph.D." And in the book he goes into why he chose to study biology, anatomy and chemistry over a traditional medical school.

I'd like to address some of the more idiotic negative reviews I've seen on here, because I think they're a misrepresentation of what you really find in this book. One person says the author recommends using birch twigs to brush your teeth, and he doesn't, he mentions a group of buddhist monks or something somwhere who did use birch twigs, all he does is tell you why they did it and offers a more practical alternative. Another reviewer talks of how "silly" it is that things about your health can be indicated by your eye color(iridology)...if you saw someone with a pale face or a rash on their skin, you'd be quick to assume they were unhealthy in some way, but the idea that health could possibly impact eye color?! Proposterous!!

Anyway, be wary of the 1-star reviews, they all sound similar, one of them even posted a verbatim review of Tombak's other book.

I can't vouch for the effectiveness of EVERY remedy in the book, but I have implemented a few, like nutrition timing and food combining(don't eat your carbs with your proteins). Before I had to stuff myself to feel full, and if I wasn't stuffed I was hungry, and I'd be tired after I ate. Now I rarely get tired after eating, food feels like it digests much faster, and though I don't still feel stuffed an hour later, I'm not hungry just because my stomach's empty; satisfied.

The most comprehensive for its size.

I also consider the negative responses specious. Dr. Tombak's advice is both apposite and effective. Most people are not disciplined enough to follow all the advice in the book because it is replete with helpful information. However, if you glean only a handful of recommendations, such as "proper food combining" or "intestine cleansing," your body will thank you with better health and you will soon recommend this book to someone you care about.

Today the focus is on disease prevention and limiting prescribed drugs. To the reader - I implore you - educate yourself! Many non-pharmaceutical remedies work, not all are quackery. It's possible to have modern medicine coexist with common sense prevention.

wish there were better photos

Unfortunately, I bought this book and thought it could walk me through dry needling. Well, I'm glad I'd attended an excellent course, first. I felt it had poor photos and not very good explanations of where and how to do the needling... meaning, what to avoid, what is your backdrop (bone vs fingers with soft tissue), direction of needle and depth. I guess I wanted just a tiny bit MORE. It is an OK book, but now I'm wishing my instructor would write a book with the photographs and powerpoint presentation he used for our class!

Grade 1-4 In this humorously original tale, various members of the Court, all clothed in elaborate Elizabethan dress, try to dislodge the King from his bubbly tub. Instead they are drawn into it with him, to "do battle" with toy ships and warriors; to eat a lavish feast; to fish and to dance. It is the young page who finds a solution, finally, by pulling the plug. Much of the delight is in Don Wood's meticulous oil paintings, which juxtapose the starched, overdressed, "shocked" demeanor of the Court with the King's twinkling, sensual, even lascivious manner. Minute details in the paintings emphasize this contrast; the red-haired naked King frolics while the fully-clothed courtiers emerge dripping from the bath with literally all their starch taken out. A voluptuous book whose rich range of colors and tones reflect the passing hours of the day. As in the Woods' Napping House (HBJ, 1984), the few simple words of text per large, well-designed page invite storytellingbut keep the group very small, so the children can be close enough to pore over the brilliant, robust illustrations. So Pretty!

This was one of my favorite books as a child, and I was so excited to buy it for my 18 month old twins! This is definitely a book that will grow up with them. Right now they just think the king is funny and up to shenanigans. When they get older, they will appreciate the beautiful pictures! You can find new details in these every time you read them. Just for the record, this isn't high brow literature. The plot isn't exactly spell-binding. The twist at the end has nothing on an M. Night Shyamalan movie. But if you are looking for a silly story to read with little kids, this will do it. The pages are thin, so if you care about tearing maybe make this a read-aloud book, not a read-by-yourself book.

Top Children's Book

I thought that 20 months might be too young for this book, but it's one of my favorites, so I got it for my son. He is old enough to find the book hilarious, and he will occasionally get out of the bathtub without crying if I preface it by reciting the last part of the book.

I'm not saying that this is a baby book; the pictures are amazing, and the story is funny. I read it to my 3rd-5th graders, and they love it. Honestly, you could spend 20 minutes looking at each page, and still miss some cool detail. Don and Audrey Wood are among my favorite children's author/illustrators, and their books deserve a place alongside your Maurice Sendak and Mo Willems books.

A Wonderfully Whimsical, Ridiculous Read.

Children enjoy the ridiculous, and an authority figure who won't get out of a bathtub is certainly that. Like many picture books, Don and Audrey Wood's whimsically illustrated "King Bidgood's in the Bathtub" is geared toward 4-8-year-olds but would appeal to the love for the absurd that resides in readers of all ages.

A major theme of King Bidgood is that the solution to what seems like an impossible problem is often quite simple and can be solved by a mere child. The young page in this story enlists the help of all his "betters"--a knight, a queen, a duke, and the entire court--to get the king out of the bathtub, but in the end, he (a simple servant boy) outwits them all. While the others invent elaborate needs that the king must attend to--battles, feasts, fishing, and dancing--the page simply pulls the plug.

Much of the book's humor lies in the characterization of the king and his court. Rather than get out of the tub or reject the court's expressed needs, the king tries to satisfy the needs while remaining where he's at. He gladly welcomes the knight to battle in his tub, the queen to feast in his tub, the duke to fish in his tub, and--to every child's delight--the entire court to dance in his tub. These are feats that can only be accomplished through pure, fun-loving imagination on the part of the illustrator and the readers.

As the book progresses, the court's facial responses are grossly exaggerated, their expressions of amazement and dismay heightening. And when the court fail in their attempts, they try to preserve their dignity, however wet and bedraggled they may be. The king, on the other hand, is completely at ease until the very end of the book, when suddenly the page adopts a look of immense satisfaction and pulls the bathtub plug, and the king is left astonished and fumbling for a towel.

In addition to providing humor and developing characters, the illustrations provide a rhythmic framework of light for the plot, alternating between the well-lit bathroom and the ever-changing quality of light in the castle hall, where the moon rises and falls. Within the general rhythmic framework of the illustrations lie fascinating details. The more one looks, the more one sees. The cake in the feast scene has a miniature king-in-bathtub figure on top; the knight in the battle scene accidentally leaves the bathroom with a tiny ship on the end of his scabbard . . . An observant reader will also notice that the chain to the bathtub plug is visible in every picture, as a foreshadowing of the solution.

The text, also rhythmic, is unrhymed, but each time the king invites folks into his tub, his plea ends in a delightful three-word repetition: boom, boom, boom; yum, yum, yum; trout, trout, trout; and jig, jig, jig. In the end, though, the king is stunned into silence, and the last repetition--or last laugh, you might say--is not his own, but the tub's: glub, glub, glub.

The book will leave children clamoring for more, and Don and Audrey Wood have plenty of others that will satisfy, including the award-winning "The Napping House," which has in common with King Bidgood a delightful brand of visual slapstick distinctive to the Woods. Both books would make an excellent addition to any child's or classroom's library.
