Hear the Odyssey

Your English teacher was wrong: Homer did not write the Odyssey. He sang it. Actually, scholars are still debating whether the blind mythic poet called Homer ever existed at all, but they do generally agree on two things: the Odyssey is one of the greatest stories surviving from Graecian antiquity, and it was originally meant to be sung, not read. Ancient bards, called rhapsodists, wandered through the hoods of ancient Greece, chanting their stories to all who would listen. Hundreds of generations later, we're still listening. Just two months ago, I listened to Odds Bodkin's rendition of the 2500-year epic on my car CD-player.
Homer's Odyssey depicts the 10-year wanderings of Odysseus, as he tries to go home after he and the Greeks successfully sacked the city of Troy. Bodkin's version pares down these 10-year wanderings to a 4-hour audio presentation, but many of the signature adventures are retained (Included are: the Lotus-Eaters; Polyphemus; the Lystrigonians; Circe; Scylla & Charybdis; Calypso; Princess Nausicaa; plenty of storms and waves, crashes and crushes, and a lot more).
What I don't like about this recording is that Bodkin has about three different voices that he uses for scores of characters; after a while, things start sounding familiar... Also, his attempts at female voices are a misfire; they all sound like Ms. Piggy with a sore throat.
What elevates this recording beyond puppet-show drama, I think, are three things: Bodkin's enthusiasm, the musical track, and his sense of story. The soundtrack, a combination of 12-string guitar and harp, is soothing, mystical, rejuvenating, otherworldly; it could be sold separately. And, while most of the drama is shallow, I still have to admit there are moments when I was truly moved by this story.
Know this -- Bodkin's version of the Odyssey is an adaptation, meaning he may skim here and embellish there, but he has full poetic license to do so, because he is adapting the work for children (and adults who love a good story), and for listening. As for the critics who bash this because it's not "true to the original," they, I would say, are missing the point.
Some people just like to hear a good yarn. If you're in the mood for a funny and talented storyteller to make an ancient story sing again, check this out.

The Odyssey Suite

This is a retelling of Homer�s great story by an actor/storyteller, and lasts just over four hours. By way of contrast, Ian McKellen�s reading of Fagles�s translation of The Odyssey clocks in at 13 hours, 10 minutes. One would think, then, that this version must leave lots out. Well, yes and no. It covers all the main adventures Odysseus has, nor does it hurry over them. (In fact, the Trojan horse sequence, which is just alluded to briefly by Homer, starts the story here and is given an expansive treatment, much of which actually comes from later writers.)
So, Odds Bodkin tells Odysseus�s story in full in four hours. Then what does he leave out? He leaves out Homer�s expansive way of telling a story by means of repeated heroic epithets and extended dialogs. He leaves out the gods, mostly: their part of the story is brief indeed. All the careful planning that went into the defeat of the suitors is left out as well. It leaves out the adventures of Telemachus. All Odysseus�s entertaining fabrications during his travels, these have been excised. And, as this version is intended for children, it leaves out the gruesome scenes at the end where the unfaithful servants are killed.
You might say that it leaves out most of the matter that locates the story in a certain heroic pre-classical culture. Yet some flavor of that culture remains, and the well-known incidents in the story are certainly given their due. Thus we have, in addition to the Trojan Horse, Scylla and Charibdis, the visit to the Underworld, the cattle of Helios, the Sirens, the Isle of the Lotus Eaters, the Cyclops, the misadventures on Circe�s isle, and the long languishing on Calypso�s isle. And it finishes up with a bang as Odysseus strings his mighty bow and lets fly an arrow through all the aligned ax-heads, then, revealed, turns in wrath upon the suitors who have been besieging his wife.
This is certainly an entertaining version, and an excellent way to learn the story � for child or grownup. Odds Bodkin is good at voices, so he can differentiate his characters well. This adds to the fun as he mixes accents and verbal mannerisms (Polyphemus reminded me of the Cookie Monster) in an energetic and colorful telling. It also helps that there is a more-or-less continuous musical background. Celtic harp and 12-string guitar are rarely obtrusive, but rather provide push to the narration.
Anyway, to us, The Odyssey is a story, not a guide for living, but it is one of the central stories of our culture. And here we get that story (without undergoing trial by recitation), which is all that most of us want, really.

As one who actually listened to this as a child...

The talent here is amazing. I am a great admirer of Odds Bodkin. I enjoyed this recording as a child--I would listen to it as I got ready for school, or as I painted or drew.

I would definitely say it takes a certain kind of kid to enjoy it, but it opened the door to mythology for me.

Now I write this in appreciation for the man's talent. He preformed this as a bard would perform it with no script and no breaks, as he performs most of his work. He makes it engaging for the listener with an entire cast of voices and sound effects, both from his own mouth, and music preformed by him.

It's not just a "shut up for god's sake!" tape for the car, it is an experience for your child--one that I enjoyed immensely then, and still enjoy now from time to time.

I can't wait to share it with my own children.

Teacher and screenplay doctor Truby (responsible for popular screenwriting software Blockbuster) brings his complicated but time-tested story development system to print for the first time, a 22-point process that's more thorough-"an extremely precise map of your entire plot" that "shows you the most dramatic way to tell your story"-but also more unwieldy than the traditional "three-act" technique. For example, the first seven steps Truby introduces apply to structure: develop "weakness and need" and "desire" in your hero, give him an "opponent" and a "plan" for overcoming that opponent, then throw in a "battle" that leads to "self-revelation" and, finally, a "new equilibrium." Chapters build on each other, fleshing out these steps with a number of terms and concepts (character types include hero, main opponent, ally, fake-ally opponent and fake-opponent ally) that alternate between cagey (the "character web") and confusing (the nearly indistinguishable "designing principle," "theme line" and "moral argument"). Further frustration arises in Truby's examples, old movies retrofitted with his techniques (most notably The Godfather and Tootsie) rather than a script that has actually been put through Truby's paces (or, even better, a new script invented just to demonstrate the steps). Following Truby's complex system may yield a memorable screenplay, but writers without great patience may find it more trouble than it's worth.

Best by far for novel or screen writers

I have spent a lot of money on screenwriting and novel writing books. I have had recommendations for books that were different, or foolproof; formula based, character based, plot based, etc. In my experience, the screenwriting books do it better than the novel writing ones, but it still takes some searching to find something really useful. I first used John Truby's book for a screenplay I was writing. I followed the first few chapters religiously and discovered I was solving problems I didn't even realize existed, creating deeper characters and stronger arcs all as part of the process. It wasn't formulaic and didn't give me a standard plot, but it did adhere to a few fundamental truths about story and character that cannot be ignored. As with any book, you need to use your brain and alter the rules to fit your story, but trust me, don't stray too far. It's very easy for someone to think that their character or story is "too good" or "above" the rules of conventional story telling but trust me, even the most obscure stories follow this basic format (if they are any good). It gives you relatable examples from a variety of movies, and the exercises are actually practical (none of the tired clichés such as "write about an experience you had where..." or "tell a story using these key words as a starting point"). All the exercises are specifically designed to help you develop YOUR story, not just any random plot.

Because of the success I had with this method, I used the book again for planning my novel. Now, with a novel there are a few changes that need to be made. More happens in a novel, and of course things like "the audience reveal" are generally strictly cinematic tools and don't translate well to literature. However, I found the same successes with it for novel writing. Same problems being solved, same richness added to the plot and character.

I would recommend this book to anyone writing something with plot. I bought this originally in paperback and purchased the kindle version so that I could just carry around my iPad. Use in conjunction with your favourite other texts (I like Blake Snyder's "Save the Cat" beat sheet for pacing. I cross referenced this with my favourite novels from the genre I was writing in to find the appropriate pacing for the novel).

There is no such thing as a magic book that will make you a great writer, BUT if you have skills and a great idea, this will help you workshop and develop the idea to give you something you actually start writing.

Technical To the Nth Degree

THE ANATOMY OF STORY is not for “pantsers” (writers who write without an outline). It’s an extremely technical manual for people who like to have their whole story, including every plot point, character change, motif and themeplanned out ahead of time.

I found it to be similar in many ways to Dr. Stanley D. Wiliam's treatise on the subject, THE MORAL PREMISE: Harnessing Virtue and Vice for Box Office Success.

The problem for me is, like Dr. Williams, Truby’s method strips story down to bare mechanics, bleeding all the life out of it. I found his method tedious, making things more complex than they need to be. He does show what elements all stories have in common. The problem is, he never explains how to put those elements into practice.

As an author, I'm glad I read it, but I'll probably never read it again.

Bought this on the recommendation of two writing friends and my regret is that they didn't speak up sooner. I've found all of Truby's advice and guidance useful, and quickly found his 7 Key Steps to Story Structure invaluable. My only quibble is a wish that I could understand the material better. There are insights which I grasped easily, but other sections that require squinting and pondering. Not because Truby makes the information difficult, but because I thought I knew more about story structure than I actually do. The book's subtitle, 22 Steps to Becoming a Master Storyteller, should be believed. If you are interested in mastering the craft of writing, then this book should be in your library.

Specifically what other writers may find useful is Truby's explanations of: character web, identifying story challenges and problems, four-corner opposition, and placing characters' values in conflict. There's a great deal more, but those topics have benefited me the most at this time.

'Five Go To Smuggler's Top' was written in 1945. It is the fourth book in Enid Blyton's popular 'Famous Five Series'. This Kindle edition features a new cover illustration and revised text to bring the dialogue up to date for a whole new generation of readers and also includes a personalized note (dated 14 June 2010) from Enid Blyton's granddaughter - Sophie Smallwood. This is a nice touch!

'The Famous Five' is Enid Blyton's most popular series based on the characters Julian, Dick and Anne, George and Timmy the dog. The first book, Five On A Treasure Island was written in 1942 . The last book, Five are Together Again written in 1963 completes the 21 book 'Famous Five' series.

Although, these stories are around 50 to 70 years old, they remain fresh and exciting today.

I am mainly writing this review to say I find no typos or mistakes with this kindle version by Hodder's childrens books. I know that there are some Enid Blyton books with kindle edition by amazon digital, those are the ones with the problems with typos etc. I know because I bought one of those first. so before buying please scroll down and see who the publisher is. Even Hodder has 2 editions available on kindle, 2010 and 2014, I am buying the 2010 because they are a little cheaper, and I find no typos, when they are of the same price I am buying the 2014 version.

A fine story, but numerous scanning errors

My daughter and I have been working our way through all the Enid Blyton books. She loves them, but the actual text itself is fairly poor quality. It was obviously scanned in from the paper books, and no-one has bothered to go through and correct all the typos introduced in the process. So, for example, the dog Timmy ends up as "Jimmy" for pages at a time.

Longman Academic Writing Series 3: Paragraphs to Essays (4th Edition)

All of my other books have answers available in the back of the books. This one, however, does not have any answer key. I am very disappointed that it does not. When a college student studies, they should be able to find the answer in the back of the college book. This book does not contain any answer key which makes it very difficult to know the materials in which one studies.

Very Disappointed

I would say the work of the MDM Alliance Group (MAG) as a whole is a 5 star rating. This book however is not. I have been following the work of the MAG for a while now. I have downloaded and read all their papers they make available online, and quite frankly, they are more thorough.

There are several places in the book where the author says we don't have room in the book for this, so go download our whitepaper. The entire reason for writing a book is to expand on a topic, not provide an abstract of previous work. Almost every chapter left me with the feeling that is was incomplete.

I paid the full $80 price tag for this. I would recommend it if the price tag come down to $30, if you want an overview of how MAG views the world of MDM, or if you are new to MDM and want an overview. Don't buy it for the semantic modeling unless you just want an overview. Go download the whitepapers from the MAGs site.
