About the Author
Timothy Chhim is a motivational speaker and owner of an Allstate Insurance Agency in Nanuet, New York, USA. He was born in a rural village in Cambodia and from a young age dreamed of freedom and a better life. When the communist Khmer Rouge, under the leadership of Pol Pot, seized power in 1975, Timothy was among thousands who were forced to leave the capital city of Phnom Penh. He was singled out as an educated citizen as well as a Republic official, having served as a police officer, and was sent to the jungle to be killed. He managed to escape, after many failed attempts, and survived to reach the safety of Thailand and later the USA. Tom Cunningham is a motivational speaker, radio host, and life coach. He was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis at the age of five, a disease that affects every joint in his body, causing constant pain and making many day-to-day activities challenging. He has been in the hospital over 40 times for numerous surgeries. In addition, high doses of the steroid prednisone stunted his growth, and he stands 5’1” tall. Despite the pain and challenges that come from living with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Tom chooses a positive mental attitude, and answers “Amazing!” to anyone who asks how he is. Tom and his wife, Kim, live in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Taylor Tagg is a published author, professional speaker, and radio show host. He has written three personal growth books, Enrich Your Sunrise, The Path to a Peaceful Heart, and co-wrote Adversity to Advantage. Taylor's podcast, Journey to Success, showcases people who are passionate about making a difference in the world with transformational businesses and ideas. Taylor's natural talent lies in coaching people in how to fulfill their emotional and spiritual potential. As a Forgiveness Champion and Emotional Intelligence Expert, Taylor empowers those dealing with significant adversity to aspire to peace using his simple, proven process. The Energy of the Mind is the Essence of Life...

This book describes the stories of three men who demonstrated how the power of a positive attitude and perseverance helped them overcome difficult obstacles in their lives. As the daughter and teacher of Killing Fields survivors,Timothy and Kim Chhim, I have been greatly influenced by their optimism to see the best in every situation and to use that positive energy to affect those around me. Using Tim's story as well as speaking about Tom's and Taylor's experiences, they have made a huge impact on my students' lives. Their stories has inspired them and they are starting to see how they can handle challenging situations in their lives in other ways. This is a must read book! Also, if you are able, you must try to have these men come and speak at your schools or any motivational events; they are incredible men with incredible experiences to share!

Delightful Surprise.

This is a sneaky little book. Full of surprises. Was seeking my usual dose of "entertaining hardship" stories, you know the type, a tale of courage, endurance, and achievement, so impressive that the degree of my own personal challenges pale in comparison. You see, drawing off the strength of others' helps me get through my day with a little less angst and self pity. That's why tales of super-human achievements are a mainstay on my night stand.

But this crafty little book offered an unexpected twist. It engaged me on a different and deeper level than usual. The story tellers some how lured me off my mental sofa and into exercise mode. Trust me, I'm too lazy, or too old, or too wise, for mental exercise. However, these authors (with the aid of an excellent editor I'm sure) enabled me to shake off the cob webs in some rarely visited corners of the mind.

Not to scare you off, but this book triggered some over due introspection. The good news is that its dose of medicine is more powerful and longer lasting than the typical book of its kind.

A delightful page-turner filled with fortitude, good will, and actionable guidance. Many thanks and good wishes to the authors. Kudos to the editor.

After explaining the concept of the modern broadband integrated services network and why it is necessary in today’s society, the book moves on to basic switch design principles, discussing two types of circuit switch design—space domain and time domain—and packet switch design. Throughput improvements are illustrated by some switch design variations such as Speedup principle, Channel-Grouping principle, Knockout principle, and Dilation principle.

Moving seamlessly into advanced switch design principles, the book covers switch scalability, switch design for multicasting, and path switching. Then the focus moves to broadband communications networks that make use of such switches. Readers receive a detailed introduction on how to allocate network resources and control traffic to satisfy the quality of service requirements of network users and to maximize network usage. As an epilogue, the text shows how transmission noise and packet contention have similar characteristics and can be tamed by comparable means to achieve reliable communication.

About the Author
TONY T. LEE, PhD, is Professor of Information Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and an Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Applied Mathematics of the Chinese Academy of Science. From 1991 to 1993, he was a professor of electrical engineering at the Polytechnic Institute. Previously with AT&T Bell and Bellcore, Dr. Lee was the recipient of the Leonard G. Abraham Prize Paper Award from IEEE Communication Society in 1988, and the National Natural Science Award from China in 1999. He is a Fellow of IEEE and now an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Communications.

SOUNG C. LIEW, PhD, is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Information Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is also Adjunct Professor at Southeast University in China. TCP Veno, a version of TCP that improves its performance over wireless networks, was proposed by Liew and his student, and has now been incorporated into a recent release of Linux OS. He initiated and built the first inter-university ATM network testbed in Hong Kong in 1993.

About the Author

Daniel Wuor Joak was born in 1962 in Ngangore Payam, Ulang County, Upper Nile State, South Sudan.

In 1984 he joined the South Sudan liberation struggle in Ethiopia, but by July 1985, he had arrived in Norway for resettlement as a refugee. There, he continued his political activism and studied business administration and international marketing at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration.

In 2002, he went to Kenya and established the African Centre for Human Advocacy, which provided humanitarian aid in Ulang County during wartime. After the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed in January 2005, he became an MP representing Ulang constituency in the South Sudan Legislative Assembly, and in 2013 he became the Minister of Education Science and Technology for Upper Nile State.

In 2013, after war broke out again, he returned to Norway, where he resides with his family and continues his political activism.

About the Author

Jim Stone is an Associate Professor of Photography at the University of New Mexico. His photographs have been collected by the Museum of Modern Art and The Smithsonian American Art Museum, among many others. Books of his work include Stranger Than Fiction (Light Work, 1993),Historiostomy (Piltdown Press, 2001), and Why My Pictures are Good (Nazraeli Press, 2005).

He has also published six higher education titles that are widely used in university courses: A User¹s Guide to the View Camera, Darkroom Dynamics, Photography, Photography: The Essential Way, A Short Course in Photography, and A Short Course in Digital Photography.

Barbara London has authored and co-authored many photography books from their first editions to their current ones, including Photography, Photography: The Essential Way, A Short Course in Photography, A Short Course in Digital Photography, The Photograph Collector's Guide, and more.

John Upton, Professor Emeritus, was for many years Chair of Photography at Orange Coast College, one of the largest photography departments in the U.S. He has curated a number of exhibitions, including Color as Form: A History of Color Photography. His work is included in many private and public collections, including the New York Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art.

Essential Info for the Beginning Photog

The "Photography" textbook series seems to be the best in the business, but are also the most expensive. "Photography: The Essential Way" is a less expensive but still fully thorough text for photography beginners.

Before buying this, I compared the table of contents of this book to the 9th and earlier editions of "Photogrpahy". From what I could tell, then and now, there isn't a whole lot missing. I work with digital files, so I didn't need info on developing my own film, though it might still be mentioned in this version. The important topics of lighting, focus, aperture, f/stop, etc. are all included.

If you get this book instead of the fuller texts, you still shouldn't miss much.

An Excellent Photo Primer!

I'm well into this book and it is hard to find fault with it, except perhaps the expensive price tag! I picked up the 2008 edition and it was great going over basics, such as the camera and lens, exposure control, film and sensors, and getting real life photos as examples. At the end of each chapter is a short bio of a professional photographer who embodies what the previous chapter discussed.

What software to use, what lighting in certain situations and even some history of photography is reviewed. A very practical, if large and imposing book, both for the film and digital photographer!

Recommended.

Very Insightful Textbook

I am using this book for a Criminology class (a part of my minor in Criminology).

My professor is amazing, but this book definitely clarifies a lot of information and prepares you well for tests (as long as your professor is using this as a guide for those). Some text books are really boring, bland and don't keep your attention, but this definitely not one of those.

The chapters on offenders and victims are particularly interesting. The first chapter isn't the most exciting, but after that it really picks up. The book includes charts and pictures, as well as different small articles on current/past issues in both the U.S. and other countries.

If you need this book for a class, you'll definitely enjoy it!

Nice to Rent and Not Buy

It is nice to be able to rent text books and not have to purchase them unless you want it for your personal library. This is a great alternative and just as easy, or easier, than renting from the college or college approved book stores.
