She is co-author of"A Quiet Violence: View from a Bangladesh Village"and co-editor of the anthology, "Making Threats: Biofears and Environmental Anxieties." She is a frequent online commentator and has written for the"Boston Globe," "New York Times," "theNation"and a variety of popular, policy and scholarly publications. She has appeared on CNN and BBC television. A longstanding activist in the international women s health movement, she speaks and consults on international population, development, environment and security issues. Her recent research focuses on the politics of climate change. She lives in Amherst, Massachusetts where she is the director of the Population and Development Programand professor of Development Studies atHampshire College. She received her B.A. from Yale University and PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Frightening and revealing

The research is painstaking and relentlessly documented. Statistics and anecdotal evidence are interwoven flawlessly, bringing home the human reality and demonstrating the full scope of the problem. I recommend this book, without qualification, to everyone concerned with reproductive politics regardless of where they stand on the prolife/prochoice spectrum.

Although I disagreed with many of this author's assertions, I was still powerfully moved by the information included in this book. It is both thought provoking, and a call for all humans to revisit the assumptions that guide our daily decisions.

A wonderful addition to the sci-fi graphic novel genre

The thing I love about a really great graphic novel is how the artists/writers use the interplay between text and art to each component’s full advantage. And in Electromagnate: The Book of Rebel Nations, John Rap shows that he knows how to use words and graphic elements to bring this compelling sci-fi drama to life (though I should mention that several artists were involved, all of whom are generously thanked at the end of the book).

The storyline is an intriguing one, especially considering our increasingly connected global society. The more we allow our lives and beings to be enmeshed with the transfer of information and data, the more we become the information and data. We then become vulnerable to whoever derives power (monetary or otherwise) from controlling that data (i.e., us).

I don’t want to give away too much of the plot arc, because it honestly is a fascinating one to discover. But I have to comment on the book’s brilliant use of the interaction between the words and the illustrations. First off, the illustrations are simply gorgeous. The illustrators all have a fabulous sense of color, and the emotions just pop off the page. Also, I really loved how sometimes the balance of words to illustrations fluctuated, which then tended to bolster the overall dramatic impact.

If you love graphic novels or are just curious about them, give Electromagnate a shot!

A beautiful triumvirate of a graphic novel

I'm not the greatest fan of graphic novels in the world. Really, I'm not. But I got this and I do not regret it in the slightest bit.

With graphic novels, I believe there is a triumvirate to judging its quality, drawing/colors, story/plot, and synthesis.

The color in this wonderful book is brightly lit. The contrasting colors work to literally illustrate how the story unfolds. As an avid reader of words, not graphics, I found myself absorbing the details seeping through the pages. I couldn't stop! I cannot begin to fathom the time and energy spent on creating piece of art. Artwork 5/5

Storywise, the graphic novel falls slightly behind the artwork. Slightly. The story is indeed intriguing. One would not be able to finish this book in one go if only for the colors. I found myself at multiple moments wondering what will next, as I scramble for the next page. What fall slightly behind the artwork is the, at times, mind befuddling, turn of events. However, I wonder if this is a culture issue. I haven't read more than three or four graphics novels in my life, and for that reason, I might find it hard to follow trains of thought prone to exist in graphic novels. Story/Plot 4.5/5

Synthesis is how I consider the artwork and the story to come together. Alone on each of its own, great; but together, they can be beautiful. And this is where Electromagnate really shines. Through the whole book, I could not but marvel how these pages swooped by. Synthesis 5/5

Overall speaking, if you can get this book now before it runs out of stock, I highly recommend it.

Flat Earth Star Wars-Interesting Tale

I have read many science fiction graphic tales but none of them captured my interest like this one. The pictures added are highly illustrative, colorful and very relevant to the incident described. The story is woven around book flat earth theory. Though really that's just one component of electric universe theory. The story flows based on the construction of Tesla's global relay grid and I must say that this book is full of action. The best science fiction fantasy I have ever read and I love it. Recommended.

Absolutely Adored Both Books!!

First of all, I love the snarkiness of this author's voice. He doesn't give a s***, and it shows in the way he views the world. After the Diary of an Oxygen Thief, the author of this story has kept up with his AA meetings while working for advertising and trying to make his move as an author. His new obstacle? Online dating. It's easy for him to scope out potential partners no matter where he goes, and he finds himself in a slew of hilarious dates and scenarios. When he finally stumbles across Marian, he finds himself in a predicament he never thought he'd stumble across before; he fears he's in love.

I go from wondering if Anonymous is a Sociopath or just a regular guy who isn't afraid of telling it like it is

What's incredible about Chameleon On A Kaleidoscope and Diary Of An Oxygen Thief before it is, they seem to very much be one man's truth - something that seems too rare and is very powerful in fiction - Anonymous is dangerous, no doubt about it. The subject of Internet Dating and the snapshots of the Author's interaction with the women he meets online are sexy, dark and absolutely hilarious. I go from wondering if Anonymous is a Sociopath or just a regular guy who isn't afraid of telling it like it is. Mind you, I realise this is 'fiction' but c'mon there's something about the writing that you can just tell this s*** really did go down. I can't recommend Chameleon enough and I feel with every new book in this series the Author is getting a little more game to just put it all out there. Bravo I say, the world needs more of this. Finally, I will say, I've challenged myself to read 52 books this year, Chameleon On A Kaleidoscope was the 35th and by far the best I've read this year. I can only assume the 3rd instalment in the series: Eunuchs And Nymphomaniacs (coming in October '16) will be the only book to top it. Crawl through a barbed-wire fence to get your hands on this book.

Nice overview on each chapter.

This is a great way to teach math. My 6 yr old is advanced and we use this for him. He can follow along with ease and when we get to a more difficult concept, Math in Focus gives tools to help him along. It nicely builds on itself.

El libro es una sumatorias de posteos de un blog, asi al menos lo indica su autor.
Busca ser inspirador, cosa que al menos en mi caso logra en escasos parrafos.
Las experiencias de Malasya y Thailandia se describen con detalle, los cuales parecen haber cansado al escritor en el resto del viaje.....igualmente son los pasajes de mayor interes de su relato.
Existen cambios importantes en al redaccion del libro que desconciertan.
Si se pretende hacer un viaje similar al realizado por el autor no estará de más leerlo (el libro se lee fácil) y no era necesario los recursos al ingles a los que se adhiere en algunas páginas.
Finalmente, se pudo decir lo mismo en un 50% de las paginas escritas.

The Great War toppled four empires, cost the world 24 million dead, and sowed some of the seeds of another worldwide conflagration 20 years later. Yet, until now, there has been no comprehensive treatment of how Germany and Austria-Hungary - two of the key belligerents - conducted the war and what defeat meant to them. Much of the writing on the war has hallowed the tactical and operational effectiveness of the German army. Yet Germany lost the conflict. In tackling this paradox, Herwig shows how greatly the Central Powers suffered from inadequate resources and an incapacity to manage effectively what they had. He also shows with clarity just how much of Germany's effort was expended in sustaining not only its own war effort but also that of its ally, without any corresponding subordination of Vienna to Berlin, as the economic and military realities required. But it is in his reassessment of Germany's military effectiveness that he offers the most fundamental corrective. For readers accustomed to criticisms of the various Allied commanders, Herwig's examination of the German military effort will have uncanny echoes. Even the famous German offensives of March 1918, regarded as a model of breakthrough operations by interwar theorists, are condemned not just for their lack of strategic objective but even for their tactical failings.

An excellent book

The First World War destroyed the old imperial system that had governed Europe. Prior to the war central Europe was dominated by the German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Imperial Russia. As a result of the war these countries were torn apart by social revolution with Communism taking control in Russia and Fascism in Germany.
Herwig in his stunning book explains why. The stunning incompetence of all of the participants in this conflict were breathtaking. The military incompetence of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was such that they had lost close to one million men in the first year of the war. However conventional histories fail to look at the way countries managed their economies. Neither Germany nor Austro-Hungary were able to feed their populations during the war or even turned their mind to it.
The war years were a time when the normal people in those counties slowly starved to death, suffering from a range of diseases brought on by poor nutrition to witness their husbands and children taken away to die in huge numbers at the front.
The book is a stunning inditement of all of the great powers of the time. The First World War is the first cause of a lot which has gone wrong with this century.

The focus of Holger Herwig's book is from the perspective of Germany and its principle ally, Austria-Hungary. Herwig implicitly argues Germany/Austria-Hungary lost the war because of incompetent generalship, and mismanagement of inadequate resources needed to wage war on a massive scale. Specifically, Herwig blames the failure on the Dual-Monarchy, its unwillingness to subordinate and cooperate in conjunction with its more powerful ally, Germany. Herwig downplays the myth of German military might and attempts to demonstrate that not even Germany, who had showed such greatness as a military power in the latter half of the 19th Century was ready for 20th Century style warfare. Herwig utilizes a chronological method and highly readable narrative style throughout. Generally, Herwig incorporates the standard top-down military/ diplomatic history approach describing causes of the war, mobilization, battles and leaders, major campaigns and results of the war. To a lesser degree, Herwig takes a look at the affects of war on society with such themes as hunger, disease, labor on the home front and gender issues. Overall, Herwig builds his argument by consulting archival sources previously waved over by the "Anglo-centric preoccupations of English language historians" (Strachan, quoted in Herwig, p. xiii). The author admits that a substantial amount of evidence dealing with the Great War was destroyed during bombing raids in WWII. He points out, however, that the reunification of Germany in 1989 has made available documents never before considered by western historians. Herwig relys heavily upon official histories of the war, mainly, Reichsarchiv's Der Weltkrieg 1914-1918, state papers focusing on other German states besides Prussia, and the official history of the Austrian-Hungarian Army. This source material is gleaned from many world famous archival institutions such as: Bundesarchiv (Koblenz), Bundesarchiv-Militärarchiv (Freiburg), and Vienna's Haus-, Hof- und Staataarchiv, Politisches Archiv and Österreichisches Staatsarchiv. The author also utilizes diaries and memoirs; dissertations and scholarly articles; and secondary sources assembled in perhaps one of the most impressive bibliographies in recent military literature. Although highly readable, the author tends to be too general at times. For example, the Germans advanced through Belgium in a few sentences without any mention of the Belgium resistance or the Germany atrocities committed there in reprisal. One may notice that not once did he mention the scholarship of the historian Barbara Tuchman. In describing campaigns and battles, In contrast to John Keegan's _First World War_, Herwig focuses too much on the top echelons and rarely gets below corps level when recounting troop movements and engagements. Intermittently, Herwig fails to cite sources, particularly when quoting statistics, casualty figures, and troop strength (there are examples where he does quote statistical evidence though). Unlike Martin Gilbert's _First World War_ Herwig succeeds in illustrating the role of Austria-Hungary to great affect. The social/economic aspects of the war are handled adequately without diminishing the 'old style' military history narrative. The book's readability is one of its greatest strengths. Even a one-volume history of The First World War can be daunting, however Herwig captures and holds the reader's attention. On the whole, this work is a valuable addition to WWI literature.

world war 3 getting thru this book

i am a ww1 avid reader. i have 20 books about it, at least. i was all excited to be getting the definitive history, i knew would have two more volumes. somewhere in the first third of the book i began to loose interest as i was aware of all this already, perhaps, or the writer just wasn't holding my interest. if this will be one of your first books ever read about WW1, go for it! if you are an expert already, hold off as there is nothing new here, sorry to say. drquincy

A good biography

This is one of the better biographies of Amy. It is well detailed and follows throughout her life and successes throughout her music career. The book discusses her early life, fame and while it doesn't talk much about the last year of her life, it is a good biography of her life. I think that the book may have been in the process of being written when Amy died and the ending kind of tossed together, but the author does a good job of making it work. There are some photos in the book and the book chronicles her relationship with Blake a bit more than other biographies do. I would recommend it as there are biographies written about Amy, but I have only read two others worth reading. One is by her father Mitch Winehouse called "Amy, My Daughter" and the other one is called "A Losing Game" by Nick O'Shea that I would suggest as well.

A Sad Tale

When I purchased this book I knew little of Amy Winehouse and had my own opinions of her life as offered to me by the media.

On reading this book I learned of the tru tragedy of this amazing young woman's death.

Amy's talent was amazing and I have become an avid fan of her music; now I have purchased all of her music and lament the miserable idiots who enabled her on that very destructive path.

Well written and so sobering to read fact instead of tabloid rubbish.

Not a real biography

This book is a series of articles and interviews from various media sources. It is mostly chronological and is divided into chapters, so that is why it is being sold as a book. The author did not interview anyone or have access to personal materials associated with Amy or her family and friends.
