Revising the legend of a slave woman accused of practicing witchcraft and imprisoned in Salem, Mass., in 1692, Conde freely imagines Tituba's childhood and old age, endows her with what Davis calls a contemporary social consciousness, and allows her to narrate the tale. Her pointedly political story indicts the Puritans' racism and hypocrisy and their contemporary manifestations. Conceived when an English sailor rapes an Ashanti captive on the slave ship Christ the King , Tituba grows up in Barbados but follows her beloved, John Indian, into servitude in America when he is sold to minister Samuel Parris. Charged with witchcraft when she heals Parris's wife and daughters, she shares a jail cell with Hester Prynne, who helps her plan her testimony before the Salem judges. Eventually reprieved, Tituba is bought by a Jew, himself persecuted, who frees her and gives her passage to Barbados. At once playful and searing, Conde's work critiques ostensibly white, male versions of history and literature by appropriating them.

In 1692, a Barbadian slave named Tituba was arrested for witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts. From this historical fact, Conde, an acclaimed writer from Guadeloupe, invents Tituba's life story from childhood to old age. As a child, Tituba sees her mother executed. She is then raised by an old woman who teaches her the African art of healing and communicating with spirits. As a young woman, she is sold to a Puritan minister who leaves Barbados for America. Tituba uses her powers for good purposes, including the healing of her master's family. But her powers are misunderstood by the narrow-minded Puritans, who can only associate witchcraft and the blackness of her skin with evil. Far more than an historical novel, Conde's book makes a powerful social statement about hypocrisy, racial injustice, and feminism through the use of postmodern irony. With a foreword by Angela Davis. Highly recommended.

Caribbean-born Cond‚ (Segu, 1987; The Children of Segu, 1989; and see below) gives questionable life to Tituba, one of the accused and subsequently released witches of Salem, in a novel of some conflicting purpose. In a lengthy afterword that includes an interview with the author, Cond‚ claims to be expressing her opinion about present-day America, where ``little has changed since the days of the Puritans''; to be writing a postmodern mock epic in which she parodies the heroic epic--and contemporary feminism; and to be giving Tituba ``a reality that was denied to her because of her color and her gender.'' But these authorial claims and results seem frequently at odds in this story of Tituba, born on the island of Barbados to a slave raped by a British seaman. When her mother is hung for striking a white man, the child is raised by a local soothsayer who teaches her to summon the dead and heal with herbs. She marries handsome but weak John Indian; and when the couple is sold to the Reverend Samuel Parris, they accompany the Parris family to Salem. There, Tituba practices her healing, tries to help young Betsy Parris, but instead, caught up in the witch-hunt, is accused of trying to harm her. In prison, she meets Hester Prynne, and to defray the cost of her keep is sold to a Jewish widower, a victim of local prejudice, who, grateful for her bringing back his beloved dead, arranges for Tituba to return to Barbados. Back in her old cabin, she is killed when her lover, trying to organize a slave revolt, is betrayed. But Tituba goes on: ``Now that I've gone over to the invisible world I continue to heal and cure. But primarily I have dedicated myself to hardening men's hearts to fight.'' *IF YOU READ THIS BOOK AND TAKE IT WORD FOR WORD, YOU WILL NOT LIKE IT. IT IS A CLEAR EXAGGERATION MADE TO CRITICIZE CERTAIN ASPECTS OF SOCIETY*

I understand completely why some people are upset with this book because they expected it to be more factual and realistic. I get that. However, the book is a CLEAR exaggeration. She exaggerates in order to make her criticisms of society blatant. In this book, some of the criticisms that Conde tries to emphasize are:
~Christianity
~Western civilization (America, in particular)
~The stereotypical feminist
~Colonialism
~Patriarchal societies
If you are expecting this to be a historical book, you will utterly HATE it. Because yes, there are historical conflicts. Yes, there are some impossible feats. But it is a FICTION novel.

This is a laugh-out-loud first novel, but be forewarned: Paul Beatty's humor is literate, but in- your-face outrageous. The faint of heart (or politically correct) should stay away. The White Boy Shuffle is a gleefully satiric gloss on black history and culture, featuring a main character named Gunnar (as in Myrdal) Kaufman, descendant of Euripides Kaufman, who stood aside and let Crispus Attucks get shot during the Boston Massacre, and Swen Kaufman, who--in an unfortunate reversal-- escaped south from freedom into slavery. Elsewhere, it features a character who attends Dred Scott High School, and another who works for the Department of Visual Segregation in Nashville, Tennessee, painting "Whites Only" and "Colored Only" signs.

Stylistically, this first novel is a tribute to one of Beatty's teachers, Allen Ginsberg. An author of two volumes of verse who has often been proclaimed the poet laureate of Generation X, Beatty effectively uses the Beat influence to amplify the voice of the hip-hop generation. Gunnar Kaufman, the protagonist of this coming-of-age story, earned his streetwise education in West Los Angeles, not unlike the author. Gunnar is just trying to be Gunnar?an intelligent, sensitive young African American who survives great tribulations while sparing no one his enormous wit. He is clearly a product of our times, and many readers will enjoy his piercing, often hilarious observations on contemporary society. It will be interesting to see what else this talented writer produces in the ensuing years. Meanwhile, this work will ring especially true to those under 35.

Possessing a growing reputation as his generation's poetic spokesman, Beatty proves in his first novel that his talent is not limited to verse. In this somewhat autobiographical tale of two contrasting Southern California neighborhoods, Beatty's stand-in, Gunnar Kaufmann, is one of the few black children in a predominantly white suburb, then spends his teenage years in all black-Latino-Asian west Los Angeles. Kaufmann's wry observations on his neighbors, his own poetry, and the events that lead him to a Boston University basketball scholarship are hilarious and often very moving. Recent news events, such as the 1992 L.A. riots, play pivotal roles in the narrative as Kaufmann's experiences add distinctive twists to them. Beatty assists his hero's uniqueness of perception by providing him with a surreal family tree that, in itself, constitutes a terrific satire on American lineage. The ending is heavy-handed and strangely moralistic, yet Beatty undeniably proves his prowess at whatever literary game he chooses to play. Aaron Cohen

Paul Beatty's writing reminds me that the emergence of genius always comes unheralded - a mature well thought out style, belief or idea that seems to have no precursor - mushroom (truffle more apropo for Mr. Beatty) that wasn't there yesterday. Beatty's talent on every page - a restless mind spraying ideas and poetic images at you at a pace that seems unsustainable. But he fails to shake my belief that nihilism is just a way of pissing away our most precious commodity, time. Carpe diem Mr. B. - hellish lives need that brilliant mind to shine a light.
D. Thomas says it better.
"Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night."

Loved this book. It was a little slower getting started but around 2/3 of the way through I was devouring it and had this feeling where I knew I was reading something special. It was beautifully written; I'd come across a sentence and want to read it again aloud because the words felt good in my mouth. It has incredibly moving parts and I thought it was masterfully done. I have been recommending this book to everyone.

About the Author
Stacy Zemon has 25 years of experience as a Mobile, Club, Karaoke and Radio Disc Jockey. She pioneered a unique 'spin' on the business by partnering with a radio broadcasting corporation to operate as the mobile DJ division of seven radio stations. Zemon was the Founder/President of this multi-system entertainment company, which provided DJ and radio personalities, light shows, dancers and other services to its clients in CT, MA and NY. In addition, Zemon writes feature articles for DJ Times magazine, and facilitated leadership and marketing panels at The International DJ Expo, where she has also been a judge for Disc Jockey of the Year competitions. Currently, Zemon entertains at VIP functions, produces large-scale events, and consults to mobile music services, nationwide. A lot of great info for marketing your mobile DJ business. The only thing is that some of the info is outdated....i.e. newspaper adds or yellow pages adds. These days we are online and on our mobile devices. Otherwise great book!

Basics of Marketing

This book is mostly the basics of sales and marketing. The basic ideas presented are the same as you would expect to find in an introduction to marketing textbook. If you have little knowledge of the concepts of sales and marketing and would like to learn how these concepts relate to your DJ business, then buy this book-it will be very useful to you. If you already have a strong understanding of the basics of sales and marketing principles, then this book won't offer you much.

This book will be very helpful to me as I move forward as a mobile dj. While some of the early book may qualify as "duh, I already knew that", it helps to keep an open mind. If you already have the answers, you don't need the book, right? I plan to order other books in the series.

Wow. I have read Rabbi Celso's book and the English version of this book. This is a very impressive resource. I am very much looking forward to sharing it with many of my colleeagues who speak Arabic. They will be delighted to bring it to their home countries when they visit this year. I intend to buy every book in this series

I enjoyed this book immensely as well (I already own the first book in this series and was extremely pleased with it) --was glad to see the author included a few songs in this one. I find it incredibly interesting and expect others already somewhat well- versed in music theory and interested in expanding their awareness of different levels of music theory and how music theory can be applied would find it interesting too. These books go further than many theory books and also provide a basis for understanding music theory as it has been accepted or understood during various periods of history, the author refers to these things during his explanations of various sequences or while making suggestions for variations. He refers to dominant or preferential schools of thought through the history of recorded music. As I said with the first one, the author provides a lot of basis for thought and things to reflect upon in these books and a further basis for study/illumination and experimentation. (both for practice and composition). The results are a very concentrated blend of information that while highly specific covers a lot of ground. The author goes into more detail in this book and I immensely look forward to the rest of them. I think what we are seeing here is a very skilled and well-practiced musician who has spent a great deal of time experimenting with music theory himself, offering the rest of us some of his findings and a different way of looking at certain aspects of theory. I give it five stars.

Again great book, lot of info, more detail in these additional ones-- includes some brief demos (short examples/tunes) in this one. Looking forward to the rest of them. Great discussions on sound and theory, interesting clear concise format and lot of variations and expansions. This one has plenty of visual illustrations of the concepts. Great for musicians. Sal J. Fallucco's career spanned more than 40 years in aviation, 33 of which were spent flying as a commercial airline pilot following a 5 year tour as a Naval Transport pilot. Type rated on: C-130, C-118, B707, B720, B727, L1011, SA 227, B747, B757, B767, he held a Flight Instructors certificate for both airplane and instrument. His commercial airline experience included 23 years as a management pilot serving as Instructor Pilot, Check Airman, Flight Manager, Manager of Pilots, Director of Pilot Development, Staff Vice President of Safety & Engineering, and Staff Vice President of Training for TWA, and most recently as an Aviation Consultant.

Practical and interesting

I am a senior flight student at a university and had to purchase this book for a class. Though I do not work in an airline, I found the book gave very practical, useful advice throughout. The book gave clear discussion of a number of pertinent topics including judgment skills, pilot responsibilities, CRM, communication, and human error. Many chapters include interesting accounts of real incidents or accidents that tie in well to the topic. Each chapter ends with a short scenario that ties in with the chapter topic and a short discussion of some options that I found really made me think about the topic.

Overall, I really liked the book and found it to be an easy read. I recommend it to aspiring captains and even those who just want to know more about a multi-crew cockpit.

Wide but can be deeper

To start with there aren't many book specifically catered for command preparation. It can be said that the book covers a fairly wide and comprehensicve range of relevant topics but it will be more ideal if the topics are explored further and deeper. Good for introductory and hopefully inspiring other books of similiar topics to follow.

Useful book. Concrete examples in many situations that can occur in flight operations, giving a 360-degree view of the decision-making process by the crew and finally the commander.
If used in conjunction with other great publications it is certainly a very useful tool to prepare for the command course.
