“Kimber Simpkins is an authentic force for change on this planet, and this book is her torch. She leads the way in a new generation of women committed to removing the veil of shame and secrecy around our relationship to our body, food, and feelings. This book resonated with me on a deep level as a woman and a spiritual practitioner. I highly recommend Kimber’s book for any woman who is ready to let down the burden of food and self-esteem issues. It has the potential to act as a catalytic force toward healing, and ultimately to living a more authentic life.”
—Katie Silcox, author of the New York Times bestseller Healthy Happy Sexy

“Kimber Simpkins’s inspiring journey to finding peace with food and her body lays an amazing groundwork for 52 Ways to Love Your Body, and her insights and suggestions within this book are powerful and practical to implement. “Only once in a while do I pick up a book that speaks truths to me on so many levels. I’ve been involved in social work and the body acceptance movement for years, and there is a reoccurring challenge we face above all else: the want to love and treasure your own body exists, but the knowledge on how to go about it isn’t as easily grasped. Kimber fills this need for practical ways to learn that love with 52 Ways to Love Your Body. Throughout the book, she furnishes the reader with positive ways to embrace ourselves just as we are, and exercises to strengthen that appreciation for our friend, our body. I firmly believe this book will redefine how readers approach their relationships with their bodies, and what it means to nurture themselves. I’ve already recommended it to a client and it isn’t available yet—that’s how strongly I feel about this book. It’s a resource for all women like myself, those of us learning to love ourselves in a world telling us we have no reason to; this book is a calm voice of reason reminding us of all the reasons we should.”
—Kai Hibbard, body acceptance activist, writer, and weight loss reality TV survivor

“52 Ways to Love Your Body offers an excellent step-by-step guide to inspire and support readers in the process of cultivating and nurturing love for the bodies they’re in right now.”
—Melanie Klein, professor of sociology and women’s studies, and coeditor of Yoga and Body Image

“Once again, Kimber has brought to light probably the most insidious and damaging effect of modern media on young women and girls—a distrust and dislike for their own bodies. With humor and honesty, she describes incidents of self-hatred in her own life and her healing journey that led her to find a healthy relationship with her own body. Her new book offers guidelines and help through gentle and effective exercises to begin the process of discovering your greatest friend in life—your own body.”
—Angela Farmer, world-renowned yoga teacher

a year (or lifetime) of feeling damn good!
By k rafferty
When I first began recovering from an eating disorder, I hoped that one day I'd be able to love my body. But at the time, I didn't even know what "loving my body" meant. What is that, actually? I had a lot of practice criticizing my body, shaming its impulses and appetites, trying to make it disappear, and pushing it to do things it didn't want to do. I didn't have much practice loving it. I wish I had this book back then! I would have had a million (or 52) new concrete, inspiring, and fun ways to love myself, delivered in a tone that's friendly and inviting. In these pages, Simpkins is the friend you want to see when you're having a crappy day. She knows exactly how to help you see the best in yourself.

I *do* love my body now, and I still learned a ton from this delightful text. Some of my favorite new body-love practices from the book include, "Get Mad, Set Boundaries," (harness the protective power of righteous rage), "A Good Bye Party," (unearth and release harmful body myths) and "Eat Like a Goddess" (would Aphrodite inhale a sandwich while standing over the sink?).

52 Ways to Love Your Body is also a valuable professional resource. I work as a body-positive personal trainer and I'll be recommending the hell out of Simpkins's book.
Feeling tempted to weigh yourself? Read this book instead.
Considering the diet that your friend just started? Try this book.
Compelled to cut out entire food groups without medical necessity? Pick up the book!

52 Epistles of Lovingkindness
By K.M. Smith
This is the sweetest gift I've received this year! Admittedly, the year has just begun, but "52 Ways to Love Your Body" lives next to my bed, as a part of my new years mindfulness minders. What I most love about the book is how simple it is; there are anecdotes [sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, always delightful!] and then what I would consider dates with yourself. Like "Full", her memoir about coming to terms with her body image issues and eating disorder, "52 Ways…" is an open book. She tells it like it is and then gives real, mindful ways to think about your body, and by extension yourself, differently. If I have a criticism, it's that I feel like this writer's work is being pigeonholed as "eating disorder genre" and it's much more than that. [I don't have an eating disorder, and I don't "hate my body"; I was initially hesitant about picking up her first work because of how it was shelved/referred to.] I'm glad I was encouraged to give it a shot because her writing and her wit and her sheer honesty IS relatable, whether or not you have an eating disorder or any related "issues". As a middle aged woman of color who has been struggling with the aging process -- not what my body looks like but HOW it does or doesn't work in ways that I have always known it to -- these 52 little epistles of lovingkindness help me to honor my body as it is in this moment. As well, the loving treatment that the author knowingly guides you through/to is actually joyous. I've decided that I'm going to reread a chapter a week and make it my own mindfulness practice. And I've already ordered another for a young friend. Love. This. Little. Book. [I hope she comes back next year with a follow-up; it'll be an annual ritual!].

By Hayley
I was moved and inspired by these practical, down to earth tools for improving my body image. I have a challenging and turbulent history of struggle with loving myself that primarily plays out in terms of my critical inner dialogue around my weight and physical appearance.

These unique exercises and contemplations range from a creative visualization of meeting your inner critic to ancient Buddhist wisdom practices with everything in between. Little by little, I have been incorporating these tricks and practices into my life. More and more, I'm catching my negative self-talk and finding that I'm replacing it to treat myself the way I aspire to treat my best friend or my lover and the way I'd like others to treat me: with respect and kindness.

This little book is an essential text for any woman seeking to step into her full potential and an important offering in a culture where people are raised to feel shame around the miracle that is their body. Deep gratitude for this collected wisdom from a woman who obviously knows the terrain of the winding path towards self love and who has dedicated herself to sharing the hard-learned tricks to feeling confident and to living your full potential

Event Representation in Language and Cognition (Language Culture and Cognition)From Cambridge University Press

Event Representation in Language and Cognition examines new research into how the mind deals with the experience of events. Empirical research into the cognitive processes involved when people view events and talk about them is still a young field. The chapters by leading experts draw on data from the description of events in spoken and signed languages, first and second language acquisition, co-speech gesture and eye movements during language production, and from non-linguistic categorization and other tasks. The book highlights newly found evidence for how perception, thought, and language constrain each other in the experience of events. It will be of particular interest to linguists, psychologists, and philosophers, as well as to anyone interested in the representation and processing of events.

Stalingrad: The Fateful Siege: 1942-1943, by Antony Beevor

The Battle of Stalingrad was not only the psychological turning point of World War II: it also changed the face of modern warfare

Beevor's latest book Ardennes 1944: The Battle of the Bulge is now available from Viking Books

Historians and reviewers worldwide have hailed Antony Beevor's magisterial Stalingrad as the definitive account of World War II's most harrowing battle.

In August 1942, Hitler's huge Sixth Army reached the city that bore Stalin's name. In the five-month siege that followed, the Russians fought to hold Stalingrad at any cost; then, in an astonishing reversal, encircled and trapped their Nazi enemy. This battle for the ruins of a city cost more than a million lives. Stalingrad conveys the experience of soldiers on both sides, fighting in inhuman conditions, and of civilians trapped on an urban battlefield. Amazon.com Review
Hitler made two fundamental and crippling mistakes during the Second World War: The first was his whimsical belief that the United Kingdom would eventually become his ally, which delayed his decision to launch a major invasion of Britain, whose army was unprepared for the force of blitzkrieg warfare. The second was the ill-conceived Operation Barbarossa--an invasion of Russia that was supposed to take the German army to the gates of Moscow. Antony Beevor's thoughtfully researched compendium recalls this epic struggle for Stalingrad. No one, least of all the Germans, could foretell the deep well of Soviet resolve that would become the foundation of the Red Army; Russia, the Germans believed, would fall as swiftly as France and Poland. The ill-prepared Nazi forces were trapped in a bloody war of attrition against the Russian behemoth, which held them in the pit of Stalingrad for nearly two years. Beevor points out that the Russians were by no means ready for the war either, making their stand even more remarkable; Soviet intelligence spent as much time spying on its own forces--in fear of desertion, treachery, and incompetence--as they did on the Nazis. Due attention is also given to the points of view of the soldiers and generals of both forces, from the sickening battles to life in the gulags.

Many believe Stalingrad to be the turning point of the war. The Nazi war machine proved to be fallible as it spread itself too thin for a cause that was born more from arrogance than practicality. The Germans never recovered, and its weakened defenses were no match for the Allied invasion of 1944. We know little of what took place in Stalingrad or its overall significance, leading Beevor to humbly admit that "[t]he Battle of Stalingrad remains such an ideologically charged and symbolically important subject that the last word will not be heard for many years." This is true. But this gripping account should become the standard work against which all others should measure themselves. --Jeremy Storey

From Publishers Weekly
This gripping account of Germany's notorious campaign combines sophisticated use of previously published firsthand accounts in German and Russian along with newly available Soviet archival sources and caches of letters from the front. For Beevor (Paris After the Liberation, 1944-1949), the 1942 German offensive was a gamble that reflected Hitler's growing ascendancy over his military subordinates. The wide-open mobile operations that took the 6th Army into Stalingrad were nevertheless so successful that Soviet authorities insisted they could be explained only by treason. (Over 13,000 Soviet soldiers were formally executed during the battle for Stalingrad alone.) Combat in Stalingrad, however, deprived the Germans of their principal force multipliers of initiative and flexibility. The close-gripped fighting brought men to the limits of endurance, then kept them there. Beevor juxtaposes the grotesque with the mundane, demonstrating the routines that men on both sides developed to cope with an environment that brought them to the edge of madness. The end began when German army commander Friedrich von Paulus refused to prepare for the counterattack everyone knew was coming. An encircled 6th Army could neither be supplied by air nor fight its way out of the pocket unsupported. Fewer than 10,000 of Stalingrad's survivors ever saw Germany again. For the Soviet Union, the victory became a symbol not of a government, but of a people. The men and women who died in the city's rubble could have had worse epitaphs than this sympathetic treatment. From Library Journal
More than half a century later, the Battle of Stalingrad still strikes powerful chords. Its titanic scale and ferocity, the endurance and fighting capacities of the combatants, and the huge importance of the outcome to the larger world war beyond combine to give the terrific clash on the Volga a unique, epic quality. All this comes out splendidly in this book. Beevor (Paris After the Liberation, LJ 8/94) has drawn on archival and published sources in Russia and the West, along with revealing interviews with veterans on both sides. The savagery of Stalin's regime toward its own people, struggling to emerge both alive and victorious from the deadly battle with the invading Germans, has not been bettered. This is a thoroughly mesmerizing narrative to be read by specialists and generalists alike. Highly recommended.

Proceed with caution
By Leo
Antony Beevor’s Stalingrad is an interesting book for anybody who likes the World War II history.
When I finished it I've got a strong impression that the author is much more favorable to the German side of the conflict. This was unusual particularly considering the following WWII history books: "When Titans Clashed",When Titans Clashed: How the Red Army Stopped Hitler (Modern War Studies) revised and expanded edition by D.M. Glantz and J.M. House, and "Bloodlands"Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin by T. Snider.
Glatz and House are renowned military historians. They are both colonels, US army, retired.
Timothy Snyder is a Professor of history at Yale. Personally I prefer these authors over Mr. Beevor.

1. It seems that any author attempting to write a WWII books wants to bring something new to a reader. One of the main points of Mr. Beevor is that there were many Russians on the German side. He makes this point on the second page of the Preface of the book. These Russians were so called Hilfswillige (HIWIs) basically volunteer laborers who were former POW. With Germans being in the process of starving in excess of 3 million of soviet POW it is hardly surprising that some of them decided to try their luck with their captors. According to Snyder: “The German prisoner-of-war camps in the East were far deadlier then the German concentration camps.” “The Germans shot, on a conservative estimate, half a million Soviet prisoners of war. By way of starvation or mistreatment during transit, they killed about 2.6 million more.”(Bloodlands, p.183, 184). Glantz and House echo this comment:”…at least 3.3 million Soviet prisoners of war died in German hands through starvation, disease, and exposure, especially during the first year of the invasion. This represented 58% of the total number of Soviet soldiers captured by the Germans.” You will not find these numbers in the Bevor’s book. The major emphasis is on the fate of the German POWs. On page 420 of his book he describes the conditions in the POW camp for Germans: “Although prison camp rations had improved in the summer of 1943, they were still uneven, varying from camp to camp.” I guess one could say that in 1942 the rations of Soviet POWs were even: They were evenly absent. No wonder the ranks of HIWIs were filled with those who preferred life over death. Mr. Beevor keeps reminding a reader about Russian HIWIs throughout the book. I find this focus on HIWIs bit odd and somewhat out of place. It is true the subject of HIWIs is something that was not discussed in so many details in other books. But why is this so important for the battle of Stalingrad?
2. It is my impression that Mr. Beevor draws a caricature of the Red Army: The solders are brainwashed and drunk. Their military tactics are primitive. Coordination between military units is nonexistent. The generals are drunkards as well. They just send their soldiers in the frontal assault in waves and brave Germans cut those poor bastards down with their machine guns and then carry the “dogged fighting retreats”. Concerning the frontal assaults; according to Glantz and House, on December 9th 1941, long before the battle of Stalingrad, Zhukov “issued a directive that forbade frontal assaults and instructed commanders to seek open flanks to penetrate into the German rear areas.”(Titans, p. 79). Of course there are German eyewitnesses of such frontal assaults. However I find such stories to be self-serving for the Germans who lost the battle. It is much easier to explain one’s failure by stating that the enemy was dumb but there were way too many of them than to admit that those subhuman could outsmart gallant Wehrmacht. It is surprising to see such stories taken at their face value and included in the book without any critical comments from the author.
3. It seems to me that Mr. Beevor portrays the Germans in much more favorable light than the Red Army. Sometimes it feels that he is sorry for the Germans to loose: The Germans are homesick. They love Christmas, and miss their families and their homeland. They do on occasion shoot Jewish orphans, rob the locals from whatever has left, and starve soviet POWs but that is the war, right?
4. Unfortunately such pro-German and anti- Red Army bias goes even further. Not only the German defense is applauded but daring Russian operations are downplayed.
Case in point is a description of Major-General Badanov’s 24th Tank Corps 150 mile advance on the major German airfield at Tatsinskaya. After describing this daring raid Mr. Beevor sums it up by saying “Badanov, after this bold raid, found himself cut off for five days, badly mauled and out of ammunition.” (p.301) To meet this sounds like a failure of Badanov.
Now I would like to contrast Bevor description of the raid with that of Glantz and House:
“…Badanov’s 24th Corps aimed to seize the airfield and logistical complex at Tatsinskaia. He accomplished this mission but only at great cost. On Christmas Eve, the 24th Tank Corps, already reduced to fever than 80 of its initial complement of 200 tanks, penetrated to Tatsinskaia, destroying 56 German transport aircraft and rendered the airfield inoperable. Badanov held his position for four days and then escaped the German counterattack with the remnants of his force…Badanov also forced Manstein to keep XXXXVIII Panzer Corps in a defensive role rather than attempting to relive the city, and he drew 6th Panzer Division setting it up for decisive defeat by 2nd Guards Army.” (Titans p. 184).
It seems that for Mr. Beevor Badanov’s raid is nearly a failure whereas for Glantz and House it is a major achievement.
There is at least one other Red Army raid that is basically ignored by Mr. Beevor. This is Maj. General Rodin and Lieutenant Colonel Fillipov capture of the bridge over Don that took at least a paragraph in Glatz and House “When Titans Clashed” (p. 178), the book dealing with the entire Red Army war effort. Mr. Beevor’s book only tangentially mentions the same event in just one sentence. If the raid deserved a paragraph in the book about the entire war effort then why is it neglected in the book about the actual battle? Perhaps it did not fit the picture of dumb, drunkard Russians and gallant Germans.

Bottom line: I would not discourage anybody from reading Mr. Beevor’s Stalingrad, however,I would certainly suggest to read some other books on the subject to get a more balanced view of this key WWII battle which turned the tide of that terrible war.

A Good Account Of A Critical WW II Battle
By wooster
Very thorough representation of the battle for Stalingrad during WW II. Story gets wordy and repetitive at times, but if you want to get a good sense for all-out war .....read this book. It covers the entire 2 year battle in graphic detail, from the initial planning of Operation Barbarossa to the final surrender of the German 6th Army.

Coming through loud and clear in this book:

1. The terror of the war between two merciless armies, a war that went way beyond the battlefields.

2. The decisions and plans of the two dictators (and their senior military officers) that were successful......and those that weren't.

3. Life in the foxholes with the common soldiers.

4. Commonplace murder and torture of POWs by both sides.

5. In-human German atrocities towards Russian civilians.....German SS massacring all the Jews and communists that they laid their hands on.

6. In-human atrocities toward Russian civilians by the Russians themselves....brutalization and murder (by Stalin's vicious secret police) of anyone suspected of any kind of dissent from the `party line'.

7. The extreme sacrifice of the Russian people to hold the Stalingrad area at any cost (no retreat)......stalling the German Army long enough to push the battle into a 2nd Russian winter.

8. Russia's huge contribution to the Allied war effort with their 'stand' at Stalingrad....likely ensuring Germany's ultimate defeat.

This is a good account of a critical WW II battle, but it's a fairly long book, so plan on spending some time with it.

Puts you on the frozen ground, waiting for the next attack
By Edmund Pickett
Beevor's "Stalingrad" was so good that I then read his "Ardennes 1944" and it was also superb. To list the advantages of these books I'll start with the lesser ones. First off, they are very well edited. No proofreading errors. Thirty years ago this was a given. Nowadays even major presses put out shoddy books. Secondly, he is a master of sources in however many languages he needs to be to write the story. For the Ardennes, French and German. For Stalingrad, German and Russian. Third, he realizes that perhaps not all his readers are ex-military. He understands that words like regiment, battalion and division might be confusing to civilians (many of whom, like me, have a hard time remembering which is bigger). He explains things like that without being condescending, and also points out that German units in 1944 were usually much smaller than they had been in 1940. Fourth, when I say "sources" I don't only mean previously published works in English and I don't mean just published books. He has apparently read thousands of letters, diaries, and combat field reports from privates to colonels, plus accounts, either written or oral, from civilians or POWs who happened to get caught up in the fighting. On every page, Beevor can go from the view of the generals, looking at their maps, to the eyewitness recollection of a private in either army or a farmer who was there and saw that particular skirmish on that exact day. The expansion in perspective for the reader is astonishing. Many writers attempt a little bit of this but it is still obvious that at heart they are fanboys of the generals. Beevor is not. He covers the strategic view as well as any historian but his sympathies lie with the individuals on the ground, soldiers in foxholes or villagers fleeing the bombardment of their homes. It is not just the reader's perspective that thereby expands to touch the horizons, but also sympathy for every human caught up in the chaos. Fifth, Beevor knows how to write effective invisible prose. No fancy vocabulary, no verbosity, just clear writing that vanishes, enabling the reader to become part of the narrative. This takes humility and great skill. There are few military history books this well written but I would compare Beevor to Ian Toll and James Hornfischer. If you've read them, you know what I mean.

Dueling; The Cult of Honor in Fin-de-Siecle Germany, by Kevin McAleer

The question of what it takes "to be a man" comes under scrutiny in this sharp, often playful, cultural critique of the German duel--the deadliest type of one-on-one combat in fin-de-siécle Europe. At a time when dueling was generally restricted to swords or had been abolished altogether in other nations, the custom of fighting to the death with pistols flourished among Germany's upper-class males, who took perverse comfort in defying their country's weakly enforced laws. From initial provocation to final death agony, Kevin McAleer describes with ironic humor the complex protocol of the German duel, inviting his reader into the disturbing mindset of its practitioners and the society that valued this socially important but ultimately absurd pastime. Through a narrative that cannot restrain itself from poking fun at the egos and prejudices that come to the fore in the pursuit of "manliness," McAleer offers both an entertaining and thought-provoking portrait of a cultural phenomenon that had far-reaching effects.

The author employs a wealth of anecdotes to re-create the dueling event in all its variety, from the level of insult--which could range from loudly ridiculing a man's choice of entrée in an upscale restaurant to, more commonly, bedding his wife--to such intricacies as the time and place of the duel, the guest list, the selection of weapons and number of paces, dress options, and the decision regarding when to let the attending physician set up his instruments on the field. As he exposes the reader to the fierce mentality behind these proceedings, McAleer describes the duel as a litmus test of courage, the masculine apotheosis, which led its male practitioners to lay claim to both psychic and legal entitlements in Wilhelmine society. The aristocratic nature of the duel, with its feudal ethos of chivalry, gave its upper-middle-class practitioners even more opportunity to distinguish themselves from the underclasses and other marginalized groups--such as Socialists, Jews, left-liberals, Catholics, and pacifists, who, for various reasons, were stigmatized as incapable of "giving satisfaction." The duel, according to McAleer, was thus a social mirror, and the dueling issue political dynamite.

Throughout these accounts, the author sustains a personal voice to convey the horror and fascination of what at first appears to be simply a curious fringe activity, but which he goes on to reveal as an integral element of German society's consciousness in the late nineteenth century. In so doing, he strengthens the argument that Germany followed a path of development separate from the rest of Europe, leading to World War I and ultimately to Hitler and the Nazis.

From Library Journal
According to McAleer (history, Free Univ., Berlin), the ritual violence of a culture defines that culture. Here he argues that dueling in Wilhelmine Germany, although only practiced by an aristocratic minority, helped shape German attitudes toward honor, manhood, women, and other countries. McAleer gives a fascinating glimpse into a deadly icon of the German popular imagination during the Kaiserreich. Whether or not one was of sufficient rank to be able to give satisfaction in a duel of honor defined one's status. McAleer has a strong sardonic sense of humor that seems out of place in a scholarly book, and his conclusion that the duel was symptomatic of Germany's Sonderweg, or peculiar path, which led to the Nazis, is at best questionable. Nevertheless, this is an accurate look at a misunderstood topic in German culture with few comparable books in English. Recommended for academic libraries with a strong German studies collections.

"Kevin Mcaleer has spent five years researching the fin-de-siecle German duel. . . . The results . . . are contained in this intriguing book. McAleer concludes persuasively that Germany's dueling tradition . . . leads inexorably to Nazism, a finding that ensures controversy. Based on archival and rare published materials and belles lettres, with illustrations and bibliography, this is a refreshingly unconventional, suggestive, and strongly recommended study."--Choice

"A positively captivating look at turn-of-the-century Germany.... The phenomenon of the affair of honor must, as it now appears in light of McAleer's efforts, be considered if one is to understand more completely the critical role of Germany's post-1890 internal evolution or that country's place in modern Europe."--D. R. Dorondo, The Historian

This book covers the subject
By alex critchfield
In addition to the dueling aspect which is the subject of this book, it provides an interesting look into the lifestyle of end of the century europe. A few sections come off a bit dry and must be pushed through but that is to be expected in any informative work. One thing I was slightly disappointed with is a lack of a section detailing actual duels the author researched. Weaponry, style, result, and the pretext which started conflict would make for a nice appendix. I would recommend this book to people who wish to look at history from a different perspective instead of just wars and revolutions.

Excellent for Adult Beginner!
By Suzanne Langlois
Once I got my hands on this book, I discarded all the other "beginner" books I'd purchased. No more having to play juvenile ditties like Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.

I'm an adult beginner violinist and Essential Elements 2000 for Strings with its accompanying CD & DVD has enabled me to teach myself how to play my violin while thoroughly enjoying the effort and without experiencing the boredom and humiliation of having to learn tunes better geared toward much younger students.

I've only been playing since July and I'm already about to graduate to the second book in the series. The curriculum is interesting, playing along with the orchestra on the CD is exciting, and realizing how fast I'm progressing is a dream come true for this 54 year old beginner.

I highly recommend this book as well as Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory Complete to anyone seriously interested in learning violin.

Well thought out series.
By Gene Wie
"For a real violin study, go with Suzuki." While that might work for a child that is ages 3-4 in a one-on-one or small group setting (which is what the Suzuki Method was intended for), it does not work well in large group learning situation for kids who are twice that age, beginning instruments in fourth and fifth grade. And to be honest, almost everything in the Suzuki method *IS* an arrangement of an original work (like the Bach Bouree from the cello suites set for violin), chosen because even in their simplified form they help teach the fundamental concepts.

This is my third year using EE2000 in my school program. I usually have between 30-40 students at each grade level in the orchestra. The books and their accompanying CD/DVD work really well and are of the appropriate complexity for the students ages nine through eleven. As a private instructor myself, I recommend to all my students to seek outside instruction, but EE2000 provides a good balance of technical development with ensemble skills for the beginners. Students coming into my program who already play don't feel bored because I am able to append more complex tasks in bowing and fingering to them using the existing material, giving them helpful exercises to expand their current abilities, while they help in encouraging their beginning peers.

Lastly, a smart child, if they are so motivated (as some of my kids are), can look at the directives in the EE2000 book and figure out a lot of things on their own ahead of the class, and they are provided with just enough information to accomplish those tasks fairly correctly, without doing awful things to their technique. The included instruction videos are very helpful in this case as well. This is not true with most other methods (and the Suzuki books are entirely useless without a proper instructor!).

Don't get me wrong; I was a Suzuki student myself for my first few years of playing and from time to time use some of their excellent pieces in my own private teaching (although I primarily teach advanced junior high through college age players). However, it has its target audience, which is entirely different from that which EE2000 and others like it are designed for.

excellent violin method
By P. Meyer
This is an excellent first book for the violin. I have started learning violin again after a 24 year break! This book is aesthetic, has very clear instructions and diagrams and is designed beautifully. The progression of the exercises is completely logical, allowing you to perfect each technique before moving on. Every symbol is explained clearly, no new note or technique is found in exercises that come before their explanation. There are numerous scale and arpeggio exercises that are marked with a different background color, making it easier to find them. There are many orchestra arrangements (mostly duets), and even a duet with piano accompaniment. The accompanying discs are an added attraction. I don't particularly make very much use of them, but they can make practicing more interesting for children who generally have less discipline. This is a much better series than The ABCs of Violin.

The Complete Crumb Comics, Vol. 17: Cave Wimp, by Robert Crumb

Volume 17 of the complete works of America's most infamous cartoonist!

After many Eisner and Harvey comics awards, the Complete Crumb series comes to a close (at least in its current format—we will continue to collect the entirety of Crumb's career in single-volume collections like Hup and Mystic Funnies, beginning in 2005). This 17th volume collects a creatively fertile period for Crumb, having given up the editorial reins of his own legendary Weirdo magazine, allowing Crumb to get back to the proverbial drawing board. Included are Crumb's contributions to Weirdo from this period, as well as work from Whole Earth Review, Zap Comix, Premiere magazine, as well as many other rare gems. This volume, as with all volumes, includes a new introduction by Crumb as well as a new cover. The Complete Crumb series leaves no stone unturned, publishing everything from Crumb's most well-known comics to little-seen commercial art and rarely-if-ever seen treasures from private collections and the artist's archives.
