The best technical book I've read

I read a lot of computer books both as part of my day job (unix sysadmin) and on the side (wrote 2 computer books). Normally I'm not moved to write nice things about the competition, but this book is truly impressive.
The organization of the chapters is logical, proceeding from introductory to advanced topics in clearly defined stages. The author thankfully resisted the current trend of giving the chapters cutesy names that communicate nothing. The writing is clear and concise. The indexing is superb. The coverage of the subject matter is unbelievably complete, encompassing not only MySQL and general database theory, but also almost every other aspect of database programming.
In the six months I've been working with it I've never been unable to find the answer to a MySQL question in this book. Indeed, the Appendices are so good that I have found answers in here when the books I was reading on PHP and the Perl DBI turned out to be wrong.
MySQL is a very impressive achievement in all respects.

This is *THE* Book

I have purchased many books on SQL. I USUALLY purchase books (I own over 30) from Oreilly, as I did with their MySql/MSQL book which was absolutely NOTHING in comparison to the MySQL book by Other New Riders. I really must say this book is PERFECT. It covers EVERY major topic. It is SUPERBLY written, both novices and experts alike can easily learn, follow, and understand this book. It's an extraordinarly effective tutorial, learing guide, and reference. It gives clear, easy to follow instructions and examples on everything, and anything you need to do in reguard to databases. I give this book my HIGHEST possible recommendation. This book was worth every single penny I paid for it.

Finally, THE book for MySQL

Just got the book two days ago and have not put it down except to read "Building Database Applications on the Web Using PHP3." (another great buy.)
I am new to SQL and this book is something worth buying. It is written for both techies and non-techies, and if you have the desire to learn MySQL, buy this book. It is the most concise and well written book on the language ever.
Make sure you block out a chunk of time, because once you start reading, you will not put this book down. It fills the gap where other books fail. The tutorial gets you up to speed very quickly (VERY) and you will be building databases within the first 1/2 hour of opening the book. I buy an average of 5 or so books a week and I guarantee that most of them will be covered with dust before I put this book down.
If you have the desire to learn on your own and want to learn MySQL...
BUY THE BOOK! Don't wait! Sell something if you have to, get a second job. Whatever it takes, you can not be without this book!

While feminism may have changed boardrooms, it didn't make much headway in bedrooms, argues philosopher/writer hooks. Women have made progress in regard to social empowerment, but the quest for emotional density for love has remained elusive. Why are men still so emotionally unsatisfying? Because, hooks argues, "patriarchal thinking has socialized males to believe that their manhood is affirmed when they are emotionally withholding." Patriarchy valorizes power and assigns it to men, and devalues nurturing and labels it feminine. Thus, young postfeminist women find themselves with "nothing to show" from their newly won equality but a double shift of work: first the paid job, then the physical and emotional homework of their relationship with their man. Still, as feminists of hooks's generation reach midlife, they may find it easier to rethink these terms of engagement, to risk changing things. The first step, she says, is self-love accepting one's body and soul just the way it is. Without such acceptance, women cannot escape the domination-submission dynamic. Even then, in this patriarchal universe finding love with another person may require some creativity. Hooks explores romantic friendships, lesbian loves and "circles of love" (which allow for committed bonds that extend beyond one partnership). A life with no coupling, but "a more authentic relationship between self and world," may also be satisfying. Twenty-something women who've embraced the highly problematic "bitch persona" Elizabeth Wurtzel has written of may sneer at hooks's affirming style, but older women, particularly those raising girls themselves, will find much to ponder here. Working from the premise that women of all backgrounds are still made to feel that their worth, or lovableness, is gauged not by inner qualities but by their appearance and how they serve others, especially men, hooks traces the dire effects of society's ongoing devaluation of women as she parses the dynamics of marriage, contrasts the experiences of different generations of women, analyzes women's collusion with patriarchal culture, and assesses feminism's achievements and failures. Digging deeply into the snarl of sexist habits of thought and being, hooks concludes that women can have true love and autonomy in their lives only if, starting with mothers and daughters, they genuinely support each other in confronting misogyny in all its insidious forms. wise, humane, and well worth reading.

I have read journal articles by bell hooks, but this is the first book I have read of hers. It won't be my last book by her.
Communion: The Female Search for Love is part memoir, part challenge, and very thoughtprovoking.
One aspect I liked best was her debunking of the myth of "women who love too much." Another center of focus is the effect of gainful employment on the perceptions of love.
Her language is direct and clear, but not simplistic.
This is a very good book, and one that I hope will be widely read and discussed.
Even though her subtitle is "The Female Search for Love," men can learn from this worthwhile book, if they have the courage to read it.
This might be an excellent choice for a book group.

Love from a feminist perspective

Communion is a discussion and legitimization of the pursuit of love from a mid-life feminist perspective. Hooks believes that the desire to understand how love works is a serious, important, and ultimately joyful life-work activity that should be studied and taught. The big question she attempts to answer is how to "find, keep, and make love despite the power of patriarchy."
The best part of this book is that Hooks always tells the truth as she sees it. There is no glossing over or contriving to make a point. Sometimes her language is sexually explicit and blunt. She explains love from the perspective of her own personal life experience and through intelligent observation and study of our culture and gender practices. The impact of the feminist movement is woven through her assessment. Unlike many other feminists, however, Hook's voice is not militant.
There is only one caution. The ever-present temptation for Hooks and for all of us is to find excuses why we cannot find love or be loving. From the ego's perspective, there is always a so-called justifiable reason for the rejection of another. In this case, the justifiable reason is patriarchy. However, unconditional love means that we undo the hate inour minds and extend love no matter what distressing disguise is presented to us.

And for a reader who is not hip to feminist thought or lit, this is a good soft entry. I enjoyed bell hooks analogies and statements regarding that women do seek love in so many ways and her most important point was that many women do not receive non-sexual love from men, which is necessary for balance in life, thus forcing them to seek it in so many other ways.

This book encouraged me to read and understand other bell hooks books that are phenomenal. I respect hooks for offering a wide spectrum on emotions, and reality

Required textbook, but there's got to be something better

Simple Layout, Good Exercises

I like the unintimidating format for my students: a very simple grammar explanation followed by enough exercises to reinforce the point, all neatly lined-up on one page. I have used these exercises to supplement those in the texts I was using, but I thing next year I'll try this book all alone.

Carrell and Heavrin Update The Field

Michael R. Carrell and Christina Heavrin's 6th edition of Labor Relations and Collective Bargaining; Cases, Practice , and Law is an excellent contemporary and very readable book. Included are supplementary materials and even important Web sites of the companies and labor organizations featured in the text. Relevant and up-to-date case studies and exercises follow each chapter, enhancing opportunies for group work and practical application. Chapters 10, 11 and 12, which cover implementing the collective bargaining agreement, grievance procedures, and arbitration process are particularly comprehensive and well presented. Included in these chapters are excellent examples of items in a negotiated contract, forms used in the grievance process, and recent arbitration decisions. Each chapter also ends with a list of important terms and concepts and review questions. This book has wide application and use for either an introductory course at the lower division or upper division courses at the Colledge or University level.

Fairly good - Not excellent

I just took a college level class in which we used this book as the textbook. There is a lot of good information inside which provides a good introduction to the novice on how the process of collective bargaining works. It begins with the history of how it started and continues through the specific issues that collective bargaining entails. There is even a copy of the National Labor Relations Act in the back of the book.

There are some rough spots that should be worked out in the next edition however. Sometimes I found myself lost in the verbage that the author chose to use and had no idea what the point had been. The case studies at the ends of the chapters have no solutions, they ask questions of you and then leave you - a novice - to flounder with no professional direction in the event - which is frequent - that you can't figure out the answer. And, there are some typo's in key locations which end up disproving, instead of proving, the point that the author was attempting to make (very confusing.)

This text is best used in conjunction with lectures by a good professor if you want to get the most out of it.

Great Resource for this mysterious brew

Sours are the oldest type of beer, before commercial technology allowed us to produce the clean, quick, and drinkable beers we all enjoy today. But to drink a well done sour is to take one back to our ancestors. Not too mention the research that supports the neurological benefits of lactobacillicus- (see Radiolab episode "Guts")

This book goes a long way to demystify the process. It isn't as superficial as some of the other style series books. But you won't be able to ever master a style this ancient without the guidance of a mentor, something you won't find online or in a book.

nothing short of fantastic

I can't believe the amount of information in this book. It is so incredibly detailed, I can't believe that it didn't take a lifetime to accumulate this. this is a must have, not must read, for any brewer, home or pro, that is at all interested in beer with wild yeast. I got a little bored with the listing of breweries and what they do, etc. I can absolutely see how this would round out, what would otherwise be a reference or text book. I was simply looking for practical and well founded knowledge about brett, lacto, pedio, etc. THIS IS IT, take my word for it. I was simply blown away at several points during this read. As an example the author suggests that you could add brett, pedio and other cultured yeasts on a schedule that was based on their life cycles found in a spontaneously fermented lambic. Fantastic idea. I can't wait to try this. This book is packed full of useful, practical info on wild yeast.

This book has made me crave more info on the subject (although I don't at all expect anything to surpass or even rival the info in this book), and guess what, there isn't anything, not currently in print anyway. this is your book on wild yeast, accept no subsitutes.

I hadn't brewed at all when I purchased this book, but I was very curious, with all the hoopla about sanitation and temperature control, how humans managed to brew anything for the last thousands of years without bleach and refrigeration and you name it. This book doesn't necessarily answer all of that, but it is incredibly informative about Belgium lambics and Flanders beers. This is a 'how it's done' book not a story-telling travel through the region tasting beers with colorful characters, nonetheless I found it fascinating! A little repetitive in places which didn't bother me since I knew so little about these beers and the means of creating them. And since the author appears to hail from the U.S. of A. he is familiar with and writes about commercial lambics on this side of the pond. I loved the section on barrels. And for those of us who want to give a lambic or a Flanders beer a go, there are a few recipes included. A nice, chunky bibliography is in the back.
