Nazi Culture: Intellectual, Cultural, and Social Life in the Third Reich (George L. Mosse Series in Modern European Cultural and Intellectu

What was life like under the Third Reich? What went on between parents and children?  What were the prevailing attitudes about sex, morality, religion? How did workers perceive the effects of the New Order in the workplace? What were the cultural currents—in art, music, science, education, drama, and on the radio?
Professor Mosse’s extensive analysis of Nazi culture—groundbreaking upon its original publication in 1966—is now offered to readers of a new generation. Selections from newspapers, novellas, plays, and diaries as well as the public pronouncements of Nazi leaders, churchmen, and professors describe National Socialism in practice and explore what it meant for the average German.
By recapturing the texture of culture and thought under the Third Reich, Mosse’s work still resonates today—as a document of everyday life in one of history’s darkest eras and as a living memory that reminds us never to forget.

A BOOK OF MANY USES ..........
By Kay's Husband
This is a book of many uses for the student or for just the interested reader. Many books on the shelf concern the history of The Third Reich or World War combats but few concern themselves with the material written inside the Reich before and during the war. Normally one would need seek out memoirs or diaries for that sort of thing, but this book amply supplies various writing from within the Reich by for the most part dedicated Nazis.

The subjects range from the culture itself, to heroes and myths, to racism, to christianity, to whether it is proper for a German woman to have a career or is it more important to have children. Even Adolf Hitler rings in with a speech about that question.

I have the Grosset's Universal Library trade paperback from 1968 which cost a lowly $2.65 at the time. It's good to see this later reprint which will allow a larger, contemporary audience to be privy to the book. For the serious investigator of the Third Reich it is interesting as well as informing to read in translation extracts of the writings of the Third Reich. The book is a keeper.

A necessary item in every historian's and political theorist's bookshelf
By DaveYarnell
If anyone wishes to understand the rise of dictatorship, the rhetoric of control, or the way that emotions can control the masses, this book is absolutely necessary. "Nazi Culture," uses primary sources written by the Nazi Party themselves during their rise and climax of power. Mosse offers only introductions to the sections, and allows you to be the judge of the articles themselves.

For anyone who wants to avoid fascist elements in a free country, this is a necessity. Don't let a scholar tell you his opinions, use this book to study the texts and become a scholar yourself.

I remember 1966 (the year this book was published) pretty well.
By Amazon Customer
Clear, well written and as pertinent today as it was in 1966. I'm especially interested in how many of today's far right politics seem to be just blurred, mirror images of the mainstream political "facts" being propagated in 1930s Nazi Germany. Some of the weirder things accepted by last century's leading Conservative "thinkers" as being proven and accepted baseline can be seen espoused by today's Tea Party. The first thing that comes to mind is the trashing of scientific thought when it came (comes) up against either political desires or ideological boundaries. Cause for pause.

I remember 1966 (the year this book was published) pretty well...I passed my driver's license test that year. I also remember how civics and other politically related teaching was presented and the slant it took, at least in a very small town in Alabama. Surprisingly, I remember it being pretty fair to liberal concepts. I mean, my and everyone else's fathers had served in the Armed Forces in what can be fairly described as a war against evily extreme conservativism run rampant. And the teaching provided in our high school supported those victorious efforts.

This book accurately reflects the flavor of that mid-century thinking as it gives it's 1966 audience a fair description of what day-to-day cultural waters the non-Jewish population of Nazi Germany swam in some 30 years previous. It does this, not in hysterical hyperbole, but in measured and thoughtful, historically accurate descriptions of the way it was. And, here's the kicker..., it backs up those conclusions with documents, both public and private, official proclamations and the cultural responses to them. Fascinating.

Upon reflection, I think it's more relevant today than it was in 1966. It certainly needs more reading today.

Saving Capitalism from the Capitalists: Unleashing the Power of Financial Markets to Create Wealth and Spread Opportunity, by Raghuram G.

Saving Capitalism from the Capitalists is a groundbreaking book that will radically change our understanding of the capitalist system, particularly the role of financial markets. They are the catalyst for inspiring human ingenuity and spreading prosperity. The perception of many, especially in the wake of never-ending corporate scandals, is that financial markets are parasitic institutions that feed off the blood, sweat, and tears of the rest of us. The reality is far different.

This book breaks free of traditional ideological arguments of the Right and Left and points to a new way of understanding and spreading the extraordinary wealth-generating capabilities of capitalism.

From Publishers Weekly
Rajan and Zingales take the Chicago school of economic theory in a new direction with an erudite, comprehensive defense of the free market system, steering a course between conservative isolationists and liberal antiglobalizationists. Only unfettered markets, rather than protectionism, they argue, can provide an environment supporting competition, innovation and economic growth. When businesses suffer losses or fail completely, it means competition is successfully weeding out the incapable-and the authors have nothing but harsh words for governmental attempts to prop up sagging industries through subsidies or tariffs on foreign competitors. They're honest in acknowledging that their "tough break" approach to failure offers little consolation to downsized laborers, but gamely suggest the economically "distressed" should recognize their options and look beyond obfuscating corporate rhetoric about "saving jobs." The book draws strong historical parallels between the half-century market clampdown following the Great Depression, when the public recoiled at the consequences of unmanaged economic risk, and the pessimism fostered by recent high-profile failures and corporate excesses. Because the authors view political support for the free market system as always tenuous, they offer suggestions on how to combat antimarket sentiments by promoting a stronger international market, which would reduce the ability of economic "incumbents" to persuade governments to suppress competition while offering workers some protection against the risks of failure. They argue their case well (though general readers may find some of the more academic passages tough going) and provide a clear new definition for the terms of the free market debate.
Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
The authors, both professors of finance at the University of Chicago's graduate school of business, take an in-depth look at the advantages and shortcomings of free financial systems in a historical context. They argue that although free markets are often reviled, especially during economic downturns, the inherent risks involved and the propensity for some individuals and corporations to corrupt the system can be overcome somewhat. When markets are suppressed, as happened after the Great Depression, competition is stifled, and trade tariffs that are intended to benefit individual nations ultimately harm worldwide economic health. What role, then, should governments play in overseeing financial markets? Historically, so the authors show, respect for individual property rights is the essential first step, and when property is available to the widest classes of people who can actively manage it, the groundwork for free financial trading is laid. For advanced financial systems such as that found in the U.S., the authors propose a balanced approach of government participation, including both measures to provide incentives for free markets and insurance for safety during times of crisis. By Herbert Gintis
In the Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith defended the new world order of market competition, but warned that businessmen did not like competition and will try to undermine it at every turn. They will do this by collusion, acquiring competitors, and asking the government to give them a monopoly position (rent-seeking). The authors relentlessly repeat Smith's theme and bring it up to date. The most important thing they do in this book is explain what a healthy financial system does for the economy (mainly keeping the cost of financing innovation and competition low), and explaining why so many countries have severely underdeveloped financial systems (the capitalist powers that be and their government cronies don't want competition, so they hate modern financial institutions).

The authors are accused by many reviewers of begin laissez-faire right-wing ideologues, but it is the reviewers who cannot get beyond left versus right. I recommend this book highly.

Saving Wall St. from Goldman Sachs -- but How?
By Paul McMahon
This book, written by two heavyweight University of Chicago financial economists, was published during our last financial market "crisis" in 2003. This was the time of the post internet equity bear market, the time of the Enron, Worldcom and Global Crossing scandals. The thesis is that free markets, for all their benefits particularly to the poor and powerless, rest on precarious political grounds. The impulse of elites to curtail the functioning of markets is strong and always a threat, particularly in times of crisis when the public loses confidence in markets' fundamental fairness. . The authors fret about the dark clouds of 2003; the clouds are certainly darker today. Moreover, they show that the threat to markets often comes from the "capitalists" themselves, established incumbents who seek to use the power of government to curtail the free functioning of market to protect their entrenched position

Seems uncontroversial as a thesis. The "rent seeking" impulse in modern democracies has been elaborated before. Nevertheless, this book makes some new and worthwhile contributions. The authors are professors of finance and thus skew much of their discussion to the operation of financial markets. They show in accessible terms the benefits to society of smoothly functioning financial markets, and how in particular they benefit new entrants and indirectly enforce competitiveness in product markets. Oftentimes even reputable economists will rationalize nations' desire to protect domestic financial markets even while advocating openness in product markets. Rajan and Zingales show that this is typically the result of some politically powerful vested interest in the country protecting its own position. Indeed, open financial markets are arguably even more potent in bringing the benefits of capitalism to the masses. The authors explode the myth of the financier as economic parasite, and show how through the spreading of risk, required returns are reduced and productive investment increased.

They introduce an intriguing and, to me at least, novel theory that private property will be more robust as an institution in circumstances where property is held by those who are the most efficient users of it. The better part of an entire chapter is devoted to an explication of the emergence of the "Squirearchy" in Tudor England, and how it, through the increasing strength of Parliament, was able to suppress the power of the Monarchy and its arbitrary control over property rights. The argument is the that redistribution of land previously expropriated from the Church into the hands of efficient gentleman farmers not only helped create a free market in land, but buttressed the institution of private property because more efficient holders of land had both the economic power and the interest to defend their property rights. Although the argument feels slightly ad hoc at times, the question of why and how strong property rights emerged in some societies and not in others is an important one, and the authors' thesis is plausible and worthy of consideration.

Thus England emerged first among western European countries in establishing secure property rights and circumscribed government, and from there led in industrialization and the development of financial markets. The authors emphasize the importance of financial markets in nurturing industrialization and the importance of keeping governments and vested interests from rigging the financial markets for the benefit of a privileged few. Here however is where the essential argument becomes ambivalent. Developed countries have an advantage over the developing world in that their financial markets are well-established and tolerably transparent: they have established a functioning financial "infrastructure". For developing economies to emulate this, they need to establish similarly strong institutions to protect property rights, enforce contracts, prevent and punish fraud, etc. The implication for the authors seems to be that many of the trappings of modern Western finance are part and parcel of this minimum institutional framework for the stable operation of markets. Financial regulation via, e.g., the SEC, the FDIC, the Federal Reserve system, forms the essential infrastructure for efficient financial markets. But most of this regulatory framework is of reasonably recent origin (the Fed from just before World War I, the rest from the Depression era), and it is not at all clear why the authors assume that none of it is the result of regulatory capture by the incumbents they worry about elsewhere.

The book describes the precariousness of a regime of mostly free markets and documents "the great reversal" of the 1930's and beyond when hostility to capitalism and free markets led to a backtracking on the longer historical trend of increasing freedom and expansion of markets. They document how deeply the development of financial markets were set back, and for how long - by many measures in much of West they still had not reached their pre-WW I level by 1980! And they show how many of the measures instituted, in Italy, in Japan and in the U.S., were bald sops to the established interests of incumbents and not, as advertised, public-interested reforms to protect the majority of the populous.

The point is well-taken, but the authors don't take it far enough. At one point they write:

"It is worth dwelling on this last point, for it goes counter to the belief that the securities legislation in the early 1930s, with its emphasis on disclosure and transparency, was entirely focused on laying the foundations for a vibrant, competitive financial system. It may have broadly done that, but particular interest groups also shaped the legislation for their own benefit. The legislation on securities issuance offers an example of how seemingly innocuous changes in laws can limit competition severely" [Emphasis added.]

Isn't the securities legislation of the 1930s the very financial infrastructure the authors cite elsewhere as essential to well-functioning financial markets? They repeatedly make the point: "a little government good, too much government bad". But nowhere do they attempt to distinguish the good from the excessive regulation, the stuff of smooth modern markets as distinct from the detritus of rent-seeking incumbent opportunists.

Alas, in the end, the book does not live up to its subtitle, for nowhere will the reader find the answer to how we can "unleash the power of financial markets to spread opportunity" while keeping the incumbents and their government enablers at bay. The last chapter offers the authors' suggestions, but it feels little different in character from the typical policy recommendations of mainstream economists. Ensure economic power is not concentrated for that gives incumbents more latitude to tilt the field their way. Build a social safety net so the general public will not turn against free markets during downturns. Keep borders open to trade in goods and capital. Educate the public on sound economics. The authors seem to forget themselves; how in the real world of self-interested political dealing do they think these high-minded ideas will be put into force?

The worries that the authors express in this book are valid and important. The "capitalists" of the title are meant to represent the vested interests of the status quo and the real world evidence of the politically connected writing the rules of the game to their own advantage under cover of "public interest" is overwhelming. The arguments Rajan and Zingales marshal in favor of openness, in particular in financial markets, are convincing and more relevant today than ever. However, in these days of bailouts of elite Wall Street firms and special handouts to politically favored unions, one wishes they had some useful recommendations on how exactly to save capitalism from the capitalists.

I wonder what the authors think now, after the meltdown?
By S. Kaphan
I learned of this book because it is referred to in the excellent How Markets Fail: The Logic of Economic Calamities by John Cassidy.

It was interesting to read this book in 2010, since it was written and published before the great meltdown of the past couple of years. The authors are big fans of the free market. They recognize that their conception of a free market does not exist in the real world and has probably never existed. It is an idealization. Yet unlike the idealization of pure socialism, which they recognize also never existed in the real world, they think that it is possible, in the real world, to achieve a pure free market system. This might have something to do with the water in Chicago where they are professors. It seems like most economists from there believe the same thing.

The idea of free market expounded in this book is not what one might think: they are not suggesting a "wild west" or "jungle" style of free market would work (and it seems the evidence is in that is *hasn't* done that great of a job lately...) but are suggesting one with a significant role for government in setting and enforcing rules of the road, and providing a safety net for those who are "dislocated" by the actions of globalization and "creative destruction." So at least they are realistic about the human cost of capitalism and the tendency of markets, when left completely on their own, to favor incumbents at the expense of competition and the rest of society. One of the more interesting themes explored in this book is the way in which incumbents can influence government policy in order to coopt reforms in times of great change, and also tend to form cynical alliances of convenience with those who are dislocated during those times (cf corporate support for tea party movement)

All in all, this is a very intelligently written and thoughtful book. Nevertheless, I do feel it has a lot more of that Chicago-flavored free market fundamentalism than I would have liked. Just when I was getting comfortable that the book was written from a relatively non-ideological point of view, they'd throw in some market worship for good measure. Of course market forces are powerful and they have to be taken into account and intelligently used by economic policy makers, but especially in light of the past couple of years, it seems naive to believe that markets solve all problems of allocation all by themselves. At least the authors recognize that markets are not inherently stable and require social and governmental institutions to function, and they do a great job of explaining some of the failure modes, however they seem slightly too smitten with markets as a panacea for my taste, and then there's that recurring belief that seems to keep cropping up that pure free markets are even possible, or would be desirable in all areas even if they were.

Review
I just got the book. OH MY GOSH I haven't been this excited about anything in a very long time!! The book is gorgeous, I am so GRATEFUL it is spiral bound (I take my quilting books to Office Depot to switch them to spiral). I've just thumbed through it, but love it already. And I just turned down lunch with friends so I could read it cover to cover during my lunch hour! --Marie Jeffries

I just went through the DIY Stitch-People book and I just had to let you know it's seriously amazing! I can't wait to surprise my husband with a portrait. We have 2 standard poodles and I love the pattern for them. I can't wait to stitch them up. Thank you so much for sharing your incredible talent! --Erin Fair

I just had to take a minute to say how beautiful the book is! I have been cross-stitching since I was 5 (so, 32 years!), and I have stitched quite a few family portraits for family and friends since Martha Stewart Living published some templates a few years ago. But this book has completely inspired me all over again -- the ideas and variations are amazing. I stitched a family portrait for us in 2011, and I am going to do another one this year using the book. I've had so much fun paging through to find the perfect hairstyles and clothes for my kids. Also, I am a journalist by training (and therefore very picky about the written word), and I am so impressed with the quality of the book. It's been so much fun to see people embracing cross-stitch as a contemporary craft. I am a knitter too, and it seems that craft had its renaissance earlier. I'm so glad cross-stitch is "cool" now! --Becky Sher

I absolutely love this book! I was on the fence at first about purchasing it due to the price point, but it is definitely worth it. It surpassed my expectations and I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in creating stitch people. Before purchasing this book, I tried to create a cross stitch portrait with what patterns I could find on the internet and it turned out awful! After buying this book I attempted again and with all its helpful hints an numerous combinations of hair styles and clothing options, it turned out fantastic. The book also includes cats and dogs, some accessories and access to newly created patterns e-mailed out by the author (some of my very favorites!).

I LOVE this book
By Cassie Wernli
I LOVE this book. I've had it for about 4 months now and I'm still loving it! I'm doing family stitch people for my Christmas presents, and I love picking out each person and making every detail to look just like them. The possibilities are endless! And I love the thoughtfulness of the gift when I'm done. It really gives you an opportunity to give someone a nice, thoughtful gift, which is hard these days. And they still turn out modern and cute with a nice white picture frame. And frankly it's relaxing to sit down and cross stitch. Love it!

This book is great as a how to guide
By Cynthia D Spann
This book is great as a how to guide. The figures turn out really cute and the instructions on how to customize them are really good.

The only thing that surprised me was the paper the book was printed on. The book was very expensive and I did not expect it to be printed on such thin paper. The pages don't seem like they will be very durable with much use. I would have been happier if it had higher quality - thicker or laminated - pages. If the book is to continue being sold at such a high price, the quality of the pages needs to improve a lot.

Amazon.com Review
Seventeen-year-old Cassandra Mortmain wants to become a writer. Trouble is, she's the daughter of a once-famous author with a severe case of writer's block. Her family--beautiful sister Rose, brooding father James, ethereal stepmother Topaz--is barely scraping by in a crumbling English castle they leased when times were good. Now there's very little furniture, hardly any food, and just a few pages of notebook paper left to write on. Bravely making the best of things, Cassandra gets hold of a journal and begins her literary apprenticeship by refusing to face the facts. She writes, "I have just remarked to Rose that our situation is really rather romantic, two girls in this strange and lonely house. She replied that she saw nothing romantic about being shut up in a crumbling ruin surrounded by a sea of mud."

Rose longs for suitors and new tea dresses while Cassandra scorns romance: "I know all about the facts of life. And I don't think much of them." But romantic isolation comes to an end both for the family and for Cassandra's heart when the wealthy, adventurous Cotton family takes over the nearby estate. Cassandra is a witty, pensive, observant heroine, just the right voice for chronicling the perilous cusp of adulthood. Some people have compared I Capture the Castle to the novels of Jane Austen, and it's just as well-plotted and witty. But the Mortmains are more bohemian--as much like the Addams Family as like any of Austen's characters. Dodie Smith, author of 101 Dalmations, wrote this novel in 1948. And though the story is set in the 1930s, it still feels fresh, and well deserves its reputation as a modern classic. --Maria Dolan

Review
   • "The appeal of the book is that of a time of innocence... When a girl of 17 could still be all but untouched by sexuality. At the same time it captures the pangs of growing up and unrequited first love." --Observer

   • "When I read I Capture the Castle it immediately became one of my favourite novels of all time, and I was very annoyed that nobody had told me about it before." --J.K Rowling

From the Publisher
"I Capture the Castle is finally back in print. It should be welcomed with a bouquet of roses and a brass band. Ever since I was handed a tattered copy years ago with the recommendation 'You'll love it,' it has been one of my favorite novels. Cassandra Mortmain is one hell of a narrator, offering sharp wit, piercing insight and touching lyricism. She is a heroine we readers wish we could be, a young woman it is impossible not to adore." --Susan Isaacs

"Dreamy and funny...an odd, shimmering timelessness clings to its pages. A thousand and one cheers for its reissue. A+" --Entertainment Weekly

"It is an occasion worth celebrating when a sparkling novel, a work of wit, irony and feeling is brought back into print after an absence of many years. So uncork the champagne for I Capture the Castle." --Los Angeles Times

"It's as fresh as if it were written this morning and as classic as Jane Austen. I'm very happy to have met it." --Donald Westlake

"A delicious, compulsively readable novel about young love and its vicissitudes. What fun!" --Erica Jong

"Much more fun than the reader has any right to expect." --The Weekly Standard

Cassandra Listens to Miss Blossom in The Ruins of Godys
By Pippin O' Rohan
Every year when an American friend of mine stays with relatives in London early Spring, she pays a visit to a Mrs. Ferber in Dorset Square. They have been acquainted for decades and it has become an annual ritual which she always looks forward to with the greatest of pleasure. The elder and kindly Mrs. Ferber over time has become one of her finest literary mentors, and after they speak about news overseas at tea, they engage in a lively discussion of old and new books that are to be commended and exchanged.

Maeve, for that is the name of my friend, once told me that if it had not been for Mrs. Ferber, she would hardly be able to string a sentence together in English. So out of curiosity, I asked her on her return to New York what was Mrs. Ferber's latest reading suggestion. Maeve smiled and promptly replied: "I Capture The Castle" (1948), by a British author Dodie Smith because it reminded Mrs. Ferber of some early anecdotes Maeve had relayed to her in the past, and most of all, because it is a bright and intelligent delight in itself. Never having heard of it, I naturally asked Maeve for more details as I sensed her enthusiasm, and she is a great one for the books.

"I'll try to give you what is known as an 'ice-breaker', or I'll go off on a rambling essay", she began. 'I Capture The Castle' is a fictional autobiographical diary, and I recognized all the people in the book because they are real, as real as could be. You and I have met them at some point along the way from past experience and roads traveled together. As for the story, two English sisters, Cassandra and Rose Mortmain, are brought up in the 30s by their flamboyant father and young eclectic stepmother, Topaz, in an old Tudor house built among the ruins of a Norman castle that was destroyed during Cromwell's time. The younger sister, Cassandra, now seventeen begins her entry: "I write this sitting in the kitchen sink", and proceeds to call her family 'The Ruined Mortmains'. Her father, a passionate lion of a man and an author, wrote a big splash that was an original and intellectual sensation pre-Joyce's Ulysses and made a fortune with it in America among its readership".

"For a variety of reasons that Cassandra explains at the opening of her journal, the Mortmain Household is now in rack and ruins, hungry and cold, and her irascible and solitary father spends his time holed up in the gatehouse, reading detective novels on loan from the small village library. Rose, her older sister at twenty-one, is a magnificent and fearless beauty, trapped in what she calls a 'crumbling sea of mud'. A realist and born to spread her wings, she finds nothing romantic about their life-style. There is also in this circle a younger brother Thomas, and finally Stephen Colly adopted by the family when his mother died, a native of the village who works hard to keep them all afloat. And then as dark clouds continue to descend on the increasingly impoverished castle, two American brothers, Simon and Neil Cotton, inheritors of the neighboring Estate Manor, show up on the scene".

Here Maeve paused for the longest time. "Well?", I asked her, expecting more of a summary. But what Maeve knew she was not about to reveal, leaving me in literary shadows. After a slight nudge on my part, she finally added with a wry laugh: "In many ways, it reminded me of such true stories at that age, but what if I were to tell you that I have yet to enjoy a novel so similar, and yet different to 'Pride and Prejudice' before? As for the two sisters, Cassandra and Rose in Dodie Smith's narrative, they are able to identify with Jane Austen's novel at once on the arrival of the brothers and inheritors of the near-by Scoatny Hall. There is also a Miss Blossom in this scenario, and she might serve as a helpful reminder to many of us when we listen to her today at a more mature age, reminding us how life at times has a singular way of falling into place. And, here I plan to tell you no more, except that it gave me a great deal to think about".

'I Capture The Castle' has great elements of joy, at times sadness and growing-pains, tenderness, threads of ongoing realities that we are all faced with at a young age, sometimes later, with thoughts on how we wish to live, laced with musings on altruism, religion, romance, fortune, beauty, art and music, psychology, the difference in etiquette and ways between the British and Americans, and more. But, what makes this famous novel rare and unusual is that the young and particularly engaging bright Cassandra knows what it is to be loved and to love, with genuine passion at the conclusion of this satisfying story.

With fond memories of Holly Park today now extant - all a bit of a wonderful fairy tale, while thanking Dodie Smith (1896-1990) for writing so honestly and brilliantly from her own observations, imagination and vantage point about this transitional passage of youth in our lives.

Evocative writing and an interesting story
By Christopher E
This is certainly a period piece, set in the 1930's, so while it's somewhat old fashioned in its feel, the writing is some of the most evocative I've read. It's not action packed by any means, and it's entirely first person, but it reads quickly and I found it very enjoyable. I appreciated that some elements if found in another book would have had predictable outcomes, while here they are not entirely predictable yet also manage to avoid the trap of implausible twists.

The story is entirely set in England but it's also got a few American characters. That adds an additional element of interest for American readers with English ties, or vice versa. There is one stretch that's a bit melodramatic (meloromatic?) for my taste, but it's an important element that ultimately works well. If you find yourself struggling to maintain interest through that section just push through and know that it's not interminable.

I find myself reading many more novels by male authors than female, but I found this female voice, both the author's and the protagonist's, to be a refreshing change of pace. I'm not saying this is a 5-star read, but I do think it is very good.

Lovely, original heroine
By Summerroll
"I sit writing in the kitchen sink." So starts one of the funniest, most original heroines of the coming of age tale.

Dodie Smith, the author of the charming "101 Dalmatians," published "I Capture the Castle" in 1948. The story is a revelry told by Cassandra Mortmain, a 17-year-old girl living with her family in the English countryside. Her father, once a literary darling, suffers from a 12-year writing block which he treats as a mental enemy hovering over Life--- a writing block that is both an internal and external enemy, consigning them to poverty, threatening the family's existence. Cassandra's older sister Rose is a great beauty with a steely eye on reality, cognizant of her beauty, determined to use it to escape her poverty. They live with their father's second wife, Topaz, a bohemian beauty and an artist's model, who now must serve as the glue that holds the family together. The "Ruined Mortmains" live in a dilapidated house next to a ruined Normal castle, a wondrous metaphor that can represent different things to each character. It is an escape for Cassandra's father, where he goes for "inspiration" but also for brooding and escape. It served as a play space for Cassandra and her sister when they were young. It has a reputation of being haunted. It is also a symbol of the past, both the personal past of the family and the distant, Celtic and druidic past of rural England, which was once magnificent and now broken, untended, forgotten. Only a ghost of the past lingers, and only the living can revive it.

The story's action starts when two American brother move in next door. They call on their English neighbors and are immediately enthralled with Rose's beauty. Cassandra observes everything with her writerly senses, noting not only the style and cut of fabrics signifying wealth and glamor, but also the feelings of eyes, the half smiles, the attention paid, the charisma and the allure of each character. She is the ideal reporter, having the intense feelings and observations of an adolescent, and the articulate, droll observations of a journalist. She has read her Austen AND her Shakespeare--- and has understood them.

Other reviewers have summarized the directions that the story's plot takes, and I will not go into detail. Her father's writer's block is the central obstacle; their impoverishment, like the central conflict of Austen's "Sense and Sensibility" or "Pride and Prejudice," entrap the girls in a socially untenable position: too intelligent to beg, too poor to rebel. The father's irresponsibility underscores the missing maternal figure. One of my favorite characters in the book is the step-mother, Topaz, who is complexly drawn, both a carefree artist (with notions of dancing in the rain, flowing robes etc.) and a caring, listening adult in a largely adolescent world. She has read her Shakespeare too!

My favorite scene of the book is Cassandra's Mayfair celebration, which comes late in the novel. The scene is a quiet one-person celebration of spring, a re-enactment of a druidic rite, an appreciation of the powers of nature (both the arboreal natural world, and human nature prone to love and disappointment), and an illustration of Cassandra's sublimation of her yearning and pain into art. It is the site of a rite of passage, as well. The scene is so tenderly, beautifully done, that it makes me tearful just thinking about it.

Cassandra's intelligence is as beautifully shown in the book as Rose's physical beauty. This "Little Women" echo of competition between sisters is written with honesty. The physical comparisons are not done with jealousy, but are also not without pain. It is central to the conflict of the book, to Cassandra's emotional journey. And it is a fair depiction of every girl as she realizes that she will be judged by physical appearance for the rest of her life. In her charming and gentle way, Dodie Smith has rebuked this notion: Cassandra is the main character of the story, and of our sympathies. She has captured the castle of our imagination.

As far as hand books go I am somewhat disappointed in this text. Even once you get past the rather ... feel of the handbook you can't help but be disappointed by the typos, especially for a text which has been copyrighted three times but still gives you the feeling that it never made it past its first edition. With this in mind, the text does cover a wide variety of topics and pearls in an outline format. If you are looking for a small, lightweight guide to give you high-yield basics without any detail or elaboration and enjoy reading multiple lighthearted quotes of little if any clinical value, then go for it. However, especially if you are interested in medicine, you will feel more comfortable being seen with Tarascon's Internal Medicine and Critical Care Pocketbook, which I feel is superior given its numerous charts and tables, as well as appopriate details and brief discussions, not a laundry list.
