The Geneva Bible is one of the most historically significant translations of the Bible into the English language, preceding the King James translation by 51 years. It was the primary Bible of the 16th century Protestant movement and was the Bible used by William Shakespeare, Oliver Cromwell, John Milton, John Knox, John Donne, and John Bunyan, author of Pilgrim's Progress. It was one of the Bibles taken to America on the Mayflower, it was used by many English Dissenters, and it was still respected by Oliver Cromwell's soldiers at the time of the English Civil War.
What makes this version of the Holy Bible significant is that, for the very first time, a mechanically printed, mass-produced Bible was made available directly to the general public which came with a variety of scriptural study guides and aids (collectively called an apparatus), which included verse citations which allow the reader to cross-reference one verse with numerous relevant verses in the rest of the Bible, introductions to each book of the Bible which acted to summarize all of the material that each book would cover, maps, tables, woodcut illustrations, indexes, as well as other included features — all of which would eventually lead to the reputation of the Geneva Bible as history's very first study bible.
Because the language of the Geneva Bible was more forceful and vigorous, most readers preferred this version strongly over the Bishops' Bible, the translation authorized by the Church of England under Elizabeth I. In the words of Cleland Boyd McAfee, "it drove the Great Bible off the field by sheer power of excellence".
The two other most significant editions of the Geneva Bible are the 1587 Tomson New Testament edition and the use of the notes of Franciscus Junius on Revelation from 1599 on. Also of note are the Geneva Bible editions of 1568-1570, which contain Calvin’s Catechism, and later editions which included Calvinistic doctrine as catechism.
Lawrence Tomson brought out a New Testament in 1576, based on Beza’s Greek and Latin New Testaments, and using Beza’s Latin New Testament notes. Tomson’s New Testament, including the margin notes, replaced the Geneva 1560 New Testament in a 1587 quarto edition of the Geneva Bible. While there were some changes in the biblical text, the major difference in the Tomson New Testament was in the margin notes. Some readers continued to prefer the Geneva Bible 1560 New Testament version. This resulted in some Geneva Bibles having the 1560 New Testament and notes and others having Tomson’s New Testament and notes, from 1587 on.

Indexing just takes a short amount of time.

The previous reviewer had a problem with the indexing. This is not a function of the Bible, but rather is performed by the Kindle and just take a little time. The Kindle has to parse through the entire book to generate the index.

It does have a table of contents which is actually more usable than the table of contents of other Bibles because it is in "paragraph" form. All of the books of the Old Testament are listed on the first page of the TOC along with most of the New Testament. If you sent your font size to the second smallest font, you can see both the Old AND New Testament on one page. This speeds up going to a specific book considerably. Haven't figured out how to go to a specific verseyet other than paging through. A Direct Verse access feature would be better, but the TOC is quite usable as it is.

The Geneva Bible is in old English, but it doesn't take long to get used to that, if you are not already used to it.

The marginal notes are actually in-line with the text, so it reads more like a commentary. Excellent for study, but awkward for public reading.

I like this version a lot. If it had a Direct Verse access feature, it would get 5 stars!

The Geneva Bible includes Marginal Notes 1587 Version

The Geneva Bible was the Bible that founded North America.
This Kindle version is laid out nice with the marginal notes of the reformers in italics.
The table of contents is the only bookmark navigation, although after Kindle indexes the Bible search locations are very fast.
This is a must for my study as the vast marginal notes gives a picture of the mood of the reformers.
I really like when you go to search a word, that it highlights the word in each location.

Navigation is Difficult

Yes, the text is that of the Geneva Bible, and yes, the marginal notes are included in the body of the text, but the marginal notes are in italics and it's often difficult to distinguish between the notes and the biblical text. It would have helped to have paragraphic breaks above and below the notes to help separate them from the text.

Navigation is only available to the Book level or to a location number (whatever that is). For example, If you want to navigate to Acts 3:15, you go to the table of contents, click on Acts and it takes you to Acts 1:1. From there you have to page through chapters 1, 2 and 3 until you get to 3:15. A table of contents to take you to at least the Chapter you're looking for would be a big help.

Summary: Difficult to read because of the inclusion of marginal notes within the text and difficult to navigate. This product needs more work.

Intriguing social conventions and a useful guide.

I picked up a library copy to read--I have often taught a sort of business class, and was looking for examples of the importance of being aware of how etiquette can vary sharply from place to place. I found some good material to use for that class.

The book is a little dated. There is no consideration for texting and social media, which is a reminder of how recent and overwhelming the rise of Twitter and its fellows really has been.

I found the book so interesting I read the whole thing thoroughly. The writing is okay, but the material is excellent (and I hope has been revised to reflect social media). Interestingly it includes etiquette in business in the USA. Among the matters covered are using the left hand (highly offensive in some ways in some places), volume and tone of voice, gift-giving, and observing pleasantries (which Americans tend to ignore).

Don't Be an 'Ugly American!'

While I used this book as a supplemental text in my course on International Management, it is very readable and would be useful for anybody traveling beyond the U.S. borders. It goes well beyond "business" etiquette, and would be a great help to travelers in a variety of social situations that might be encountered in daily interactions when visiting foreign countries.

This book is something I've always wanted: a definitive, professional guide for drawing the Simpsons. It's amazing how complicated drawing these deceptively simplistic characters can be.

The book starts out with detailed guides for the five main characters, the Simpsons family. At the end of each main character's section is a page full of notes and sketches with a transparent sheet that overlaps with an "inked" version of the main character.

The book also has basic guidelines for many other characters, but not nearly as in-depth as the main cast. These secondary characters sometimes have pages that fold out and have additional tips by Simpsons artists. I would have liked more characters and more in-depth information for these secondary characters, but most of the more popular characters are there, and the book would have to be massive to go more in depth and/or add more characters. It's already considerably huge as it is.

The main characters are addressed once again with various outfits, though only single images are shown and not detailed alternate angles and such.

Select environments from the show are also shown, with notes given to perspective. This book won't really teach you drawing with perspective, but it will give some insights into both it and the terminology for it.

All in all, if you've ever wanted to draw The Simpsons "correctly" or simply love behind the scenes stuff, I highly recommend this book for you. I myself am a cartoonist and an art student, and I believe it was worth every penny (though I did order it from here for the discounted price).

A Writing Guide for Novice Scholars

I am a PhD student. This book was recommended by an instructor who cared about making me a better scholar. Stott's writing advice is crisp, clear, and actionable. After I implemented his recommendations, my assignments were consistently noted for their quality of expression. My writing is judged on what I say (content), not how I say it (style). I will always struggle with my writing. In spite of that fact, I now have a book that guides and encourages me with practical, effective advice. I wish I'd had this book earlier in my academic career!

This book explained how to improve my writing

I had a Ph.D., needed to publish, thought I was a 'good writer' but in fact my writing was obtuse, rambled, unfocused and ineffective. A supervisor gave me this book. Within two years my writing was getting easily accepted for trade and academic publishing alike. Writing is now something I consider one of my strengths. I recommend this book to staff and students.

Best Book On Nonfiction Writing

This is an excellent book. I would rate this as the best book on nonfiction writing. Bill Stott encourages you to break and bend the rules and tells you why you should start a sentence with "and" or "but." His writing flows perfectly and you can practically read it right through like a regular book. If you need suggestions on how to improve your writing slgihtly or a lot, this book is for you!
